Probably doesn't have a choice in this exceptional year.

Has Mullins not namechecked the NH Chase for Stattler ?

Yeah he did, said he would suit the race.

Racing post tour he says he could follow Galvin for the same owner by going NH chase route and that he sees him as a strong stayer.

              Plus this....

              STATTLER
He looks an out-and-out stayer and will be going novice chasing this season. He looks tailor-made for the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham and if he’s better than that could be a RSA horse but I think the trip is everything for him.

I remember I think it was david mullins and someone else from the mullins yard, maybe mikey fogarty, saying on a preview night last year that they didn't fancy him for the albert bartlett at all and that he needs four miles.

its not as important as if it was willie himself who said it but it still shows what people from the yard think of the horse and what trip he needs. That combined with the horses owner would make it highly likely imo that the four miler is the target.

Others have pointed out that his breeding suggests 4 mile's would be beyond him. Time will tell. I've backed him TWAR so I'm sitting on the fence !

Yeah I'm not as invested in the breeding side of things as some people so I wouldn't know a lot about that. But the visual impression that the horse gives would also indicate to me that a step up beyond 3m would suit imo.

I remember having a look at his any race price months ago and wasn't impressed as I just dont think he'll be good enough for this race so I just backed for the four miler. Time will tell though.

10/1 TWAR but that was some time ago. Strange, but I've watched his races and thought the opposite, that he's weakened at the end of his races. Could be that he's just been outpaced though .

I thought in the race he was third in I think, behind gaillard du mesnil, that he tried to make it a test of stamina because it was only 2m 6f and tired late because he was going a bit quicker than he wanted too, and to me at cheltenham and punchestown he was just outpaced by classier types at 3m but stayed on okay. That was my take on it but could be wrong.

                        • Honestly don’t think 20/1 would tempt me to back stattler let alone 10s, the fact ontheropes can still be backed at a bigger price than his stablemate just seems odd to me

At this stage I think its because he's just not very good

Agreed. Nothing about him interests me from what i've seen so far.

                              • I’ve a sneaky suspicion Gars De Sceaux will put his name in the hat for the staying novice chases on Saturday as much as Stattler, have had some of the standout 40/1 with B365 for the NHC to go along with my punt for this race.

The Festival Novices Chase is shaping up to be a very strong renewal! Is the NHC still associated with the late great JT McNamara I know it was previously?
