Looking at that list, I don't see any reason to be surprised (and certainly not disheartened)....
4 festival winners in 7 years (3 for Willie) is pretty good
Go back another year and you have the Champion Hurdle winner. Apples Jade 2nd in 2017 before winning the Mares. Placed horses with a decent place record at Cheltenham in general.

Yeah I stopped too soon didn't I
Benjy23 will be furiously coming up with some reason that I'm wrong though I'm sure

The fury is complete... At 6am
I don't think any of those Mullins horses you listed actually won at the festival the month after winning this. So it's a pretty rogue conclusion you've come to as regards next month's Mares Hurdle
Your stats seem way off, unless you just meant festival winners at some point in their career. Which is a tad useless. It's a decent list of names though, I'll give you that.
All I was was surprised anyway! I just hadn't heard it mentioned as part of the plan. Or seen anyone mention her running on here until I looked through the card. But that one could've been an oversight on my part.

Annie Power won there and then the Champion Hurdle.
Legacy Gold 2nd then placed in the Mares.
Analifet placed then placed in the County.
Apple Jade 2nd then won the Mares.
Limini won then placed in the Mares.
Stormy Ireland 2nd then placed in the Mares.
Good Thyne Tara last then placed in the Mares.
Black Tears 2nd then 2nd in the Coral Cup.
Elfile won then placed in the Mares.
Black Tears won then won the Mares.
Queens Brook 2nd then placed in the Mares.

As a prep for the Festival, I doubt there's many better races, especially at listed/grade 3 level. Some of the places horses were at decent odds at Cheltenham as well so may be a profit on just blind backing the horses that ran in the race then at Cheltenham (cba working it out).
I hadn't seen it was the plan for Gala Marceau either but the gap between her last run and this and then Cheltenham is around the same time between her Punchestown run then her win at Auteuil. 3 weeks is plenty of time to get over the run. She's giving plenty of weight to horses not rated too far below her though so it may not be the easiest of preps.
So that's confirmation then that the 4/8 stat presented, is actually 0/8. Cheers. Not sure how we got here
I'm not even sure what better choice of word I should've used than 'surprised'. I wasn't writing her off for Cheltenham!
Aye, on ratings she's shouldn't even be winning at the weights. But that'd be very disappointing. Hopefully she pisses in and it's an ideal prep... Before she does likewise at Cheltenham.
I’m with Benjy23 on this - why on earth would you run on heavy ground off top weight just 20 days before the race that’s been her target all season?
Willie went to great lengths to explain how he wasn’t going to overface Lossiemouth this season. If I remember rightly he also implied GM would be given plenty of time off to mature.
Now Gala faces the prospect of two gruelling races in less than 3 weeks on the back of her run at Doncaster.
In terms of race planning strategy it makes no sense to me.
The only logical explanation I can put on it is that Willie was unhappy with her seasonal reappearance and is hoping to find a spark that wasn’t there at Donny.
In other words, this race is an afterthought or a bit of a panic measure.
But he’s certainly leaving it late.
And what happens if Gala Marceau fails to sparkle tomorrow?
Surely there must then be a big doubt about her even turning up at the Festival.
Having said all that, I’ll be delighted if the maestro shows once again why he’s a genius and I’m just a mug punter.

100% agree here.
I thought she ran OK at Donny, run was over a trip shorter than ideal and she was bang there just done for speed from 2 out to the line, but for me a perfectly satisfactory reappearance, I'm certainly of the same view that something isn't right and he needs her to show better tomorrow or she doesn't make the boat...
Benjy23 - Was the surprise because Willie had specifically said GM is going straight for the Mares and now she's popping up here?
If that's the case, I can understand surprise.... I still think looking at the list of runners and winners it's not a negative, certainly not in the way nortonscoin200 is painting it.... plenty of Willie's don't spark and they change things up and we don't know about it, having a horse run shouldn't ever be a negative really, we've been brain washed in to loving the 'fresh' angle a bit IMO - will use that as a positive when it suits in future I'm sure but all a bit 'meh'
Still, if she doesn't run well (win) then it'll be disappointing for anyone on her, myself included.
Aye, I just hadn't heard this race mentioned anywhere. Thought she was going straight to Cheltenham and as others have said, wasn't too disheartened by her first run at Donny anyway. Haven't another relatively quick run, not long before the festival wasn't on my radar for her.
I was genuinely just surprised to see her name when I opened the card.
It was a bit of a throw away comment to be honest, without realising the race had quite such a strong roll call of winners. Although I do think there's a lack of evidence of Mullins actually using it as a successful prep still!
Think I'm inclined to agree with the conclusion that if she's not winning this well then Cheltenham may actually be unlikely.
That article on the previous page not mentioning tomorrow's race is a bit odd as well like. The article was only written yesterday and features quotes from the owner. He does specifically say the big day is in a few weeks time mind.
