No gamble on the day either...

Some animal! Looked to do that quite easily in the end!
There was money in the 5 days leading up to the festival though mate. Think he went from 14's to 8/1, then obviously drifted today.

    Big training performance that one!

Tony Bloom gambles do not happen in the build up though.

I don't think they expected that.

I'd be confident that wasn't a 'Bloom coup'.

      • Turned into a relative sprint and another 'good' ground winner.

Far too many horses in contention for that race to have suited Sam Spinner. Always a doubt about the jock at this level.

Archie confirmed he was trying to book out all the boxes for the Thursday some time ago, wouldn't have thought that would have been for nothing or maybe it was just coincidence that Penhill run well.

I am sure he has the money to do that regardless.

I've been in to poker for a long time, and the money he's won would more than cover that.

            Regardless though, absolutely dominating performance.

I hope they offer a decent price for 2019 because I don't see where the competition comes from?!

              He's just said on RUK

He did have a bet but "more hope than expectation" at a good price.

I honmestly think he's surprised them all a bit.

WIllie says they'll hopefully fully aim him at the Stayers now too... rather than a flat campaign.

I'll be backing him for the Stayers 2019 as long as he's a decent price.

Could probably buy the course with the dough he's won betting Football

If they where whacking into that, the price would have collapsed just before the off.

                • Think its very harsh to blame the jockey on Sam Spinner. That performance from Penhill was well above average. Was always going to be tough for SS given his style of running. A worthy winner with a big future id say

Everyone is in agreement they have crawled. That was down to Colliver who had a relatively easy lead. Basically, by suggesting it is harsh to criticise the jock, you are suggesting that a slow pace suited Sam Spinner?

                    • The stayer's championship was run over eleven seconds slower than the handicap. Nonsense of a race and the form will not necessarily have a bearing on next year's race though you can't argue with the merit of Penhill's win after such an absence.

If anything it probably boosts Penhill's win as the faster they go the better for him due to the way he runs his races, he comes late and quick pace tends to collapse leaving him to pick up the pieces, I think Penhill is one to keep onside of in this division for the foreseeable future.

He beat all the horses he beat at ascot, just met some classier horses, slower pace or not he probably not good enough in that field.

                          • After last year's unorthodox AB preparation and yesterday's performance, I think that Penhill might be quite special. Certainly worth a small punt at 50/1 for the Melbourne Cup.

I think Willie said he definitely wants to avoid the flat with him... be an interesting watch because Bloom is hell-bent on winning the Melbourne Cup according to my (not well informed) source.

Hasn't Bloom got that good thing from the flat last season that landed a big gamble as a future Melbourne Cup prospect?

I think Roger Charlton trains it. He may not have the class, but a thought nevertheless.

                                Edit: The horse was Withhold.
