  • Day 1 Yankee 2024 - Captain TigerRolllllll

Thx for the honour to try and get us off to flying start....get the Naiad and a yankee in on day one and we can have our own reserved section in the Guiness Village for rest of the week ....so def need some help and good ideas

Only done one yankee all season and that was when Harry went to Ascot rather than ride BMG....figured he must be going for something....so that's prob my luck over for another decade ....but guess the learning was that these bets work well when there is some common link or angle.....Big fan of our related doubles thread, which has helped me win many times over past few years (thx everyone for ideas)

Clearly some obvious options and accumulators have gone close before on day one (as sure many don't want reminding ).....but we could also be creative with ew, without fav, etc....plus we could pick a couple of links maybe

Please let me have many ideas as poss and see you in Guiness area

Uninspired by / in no hurry to take on some of the shorter priced graded runners on day one... so I'll get in early with a couple of h'cap selections:-

    Inothewayurthinkin - Ultima (best @ 11s NRNB)
Reckon he is a graded class novice yet to be off this season and would have him as a strong FAV if he gets in here off less than 150 - is rated 143 (Irish).

Cossach Chach - Fred Winter (best @16s NRNB)
Has good Irish form behind Wodhood & Kala Conti and he looks well treated (particularly in relation other contenders in the same form line) off 128 (Irish).

I've got a bonkers idea..... I think we go against Willie Mullins horses......

I know he's going to get 6+ winners. I do.
However, we've all backed that, and all his runners, in every race..... so why not hope for him to have a 'slow start' as he has done previously?

Firefox is clearly the each way pick in the Supreme. If Ballyburn didn't run I'd make him fav and if he does, then he's 1-0 against that over rated donkey anyway.

Ruby put up Corbetts Cross as his pick over Embassy Gardens on the last PP preview thing ... if Embassy Gardens was the correct fav, there is no way he'd have done that. All aboard the CC train.

No point with the Champion Hurdle, but obviously Constitution Hill does win.

Arkle is tough, but Marine Nationale is a 'fair' price given the hurdles form. Willie's 'CLEAR FAVOURITE' has been Facile Vega, who MN has well held, so something like Hunters Yarn or Gaelic Warrior (who will jump too far right to win) is bonkers to pick

That's without the Ultima which Willie won't win... and the Boodles is too hard.

      Firefox
      Marine Nationale
      Constitution Hill
      Corbetts Cross

131/1 (NRNB) best price with 365. Might take it e/w ..... or 224/1 ante post, when all the targets are nailed on.....

"The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is his target. He wasn’t right after Naas and he’s better than he showed there. I eased off him for a few weeks after that and he got tired in his first bit of work since about two weeks ago, but he worked very nicely at Fairyhouse the other day and looks to be coming right. He has beaten Ballyburn already, so I don’t see why he couldn’t beat him again. He’s a very good horse. One of my best."

      Go on Gordy Lad

I'll call your Firefox and raise you Slade Steel.

Going on the assumption Ballyburn goes elsewhere, he's got the highest posted RPR in the race, they've said they want to dodge Ballyburn, and he's nearly twice the price of Firefox.

Like the idea of taking Mullins on though, go against the grain. Don't like putting horses as short as CH in a Yankee so I'd chuck in the Naiad personally, but like it either way.

I am probably a lone Nara (Fred Winter) fan but along with 18 others she looks to have been a plot for this from a long way out....

Four that have a fair win chance and are an e/w price .
            Not too difficult !!
But that would be my approach

I am with you, see Fred Winter thread. And finally got the 40s antepost cut now as well. So probably be a non runner.

Tricky day to shape a Yankee at this stage imo.

Salvador Ziggy I think is still maybe a decent each way play in the NH Chase. If you're going to an each way Yankee. Enough doubt on the front two and there's no much depth in the race (or there won't be after decs)... About the best I can offer

Arkle really is a tough one to call this year but I can’t get away from quilixios at 12/1 being a decent each way play. Already confirmed for that race, won nicely enough last time out, I think a fast ran arkle will suit him well and of course he’s a previous festival winner. I’ve put him in a few each way

I don't mind that shout, we know he had class though they rarely come back from long lay offs.
I'm a little surprised they believe he has the speed for this and I hate that he's not jumped fences in graded company but it has the potential to be a guff race and that means looking outside the box for the answer.
I'm not committing yet but I'll be taking a close look nearer the time and inclusion in the yankee could be a solid shout...

Best of luck with this one TigerRolllllll - reckon you've landed the hospital pass

At least the make-up of the day does appear to narrow down your strategy options.

Two long odds-on favourites, Ballyburn heading that way and Embassy Gardens a best price of 2-1.

Not much mileage in embracing the hot-pots but need a fair old slice of optimism to take em on.

So with an each way yankee in mind:

ASIAN MASTER ( 20-1 nrnb Supreme): visually impressive lto and a bit of a dark horse at a price for the master trainer.

SHARJAH (50-1 nrnb Arkle): You have the huge age negative but that's offset by his extraordinary Festival record. Will he come here or go for the longer trip? I don't know but after finishing second in two Champion Hurdles and then finishing a 3l fourth off 12 stone in the County last year why would you go anywhere else. And the bottom line is: this race looks like an absolute lottery and Sharjah is a very good horse to get on at 50-1.

AMARITE (16-1 nrnb Ultima): Lightly raced this season (including a spin at the track) and gets in on an absolutely lovely mark for a lightly raced potential improver from a top yard.

NURBURGRING ( 12-1 nrnb Boodles): Highly tried on the flat and over hurdles and has acquited himself well in this sphere for a trainer who knows what it takes to land this trickiest of handicaps.

                    All prices B365:

Return for a 1pt each way stake: 289,985pts

Not sure when I need to finalise this ? What day to we put final bets up?

Looks like day 1 just got bit crazy with CH & possible impact on Mares

                      Might throw up new opportunities?

….just mentioned Nara in the Handicap Yankee thread.

JP Mc owned and not mentioned in the HDB Stable Tour so it could be a plot or not travelling. 20-1 in a place. Decent on trends & ran in ‘that race’ that produced recent winners. I also like Cossack Chac, certainly worth monitoring over coming week or so.

Yes I’m also hopeful of Nara running a big race, hopefully a bit of market support in next few days.

I’ll throw in Quilixios e/w in the Arkle… 10/1 across the board.

Race thrown wide open now given Marine Nationale’s no show at the DRF.
DeBromhead is great at having his horses peak just at the right time for the Festival.
The horse gets 2m4f, jumps quickly & trainer’s said the faster they go the better. If there’s no pace can see them making the running & playing “catch me if you can”.
Some of those in behind will have their jumping tested at speed trying to keep up IMO.
Previous Festival winner, has only ever been out of the first 3 twice in his life (1st time the run immediately after winning the Triumph, 2nd time trying 3m which he obviously doesn’t get).
                              Rachel will be riding.

The more I look at this race, the more I keep thinking 10/1 is just too big with all of the question marks over the others ahead of him in the market too.
