Spanish moon does have a higher strike rate with his chasers than hurdlers

coastal path has a lower strike rate with chasers than hurdlers and has produced bacardys and asterion forlonge which really put me off hahaha

Both are by Saint des saints mares so have a strong jumping damsire

Not exactly a who’s who of chasers is it?
Laurina and Dallas des pictons both regressed really quickly too, I’m not saying el fabiolo can’t hit the heights everyone expects him to but it’s a concern for me

He's not sired a who's who of hurdlers either

He's not sired that many jumpers to make any real conclusion

Laurina was due to persistent bleeding problems though wasn't it, she actually won very nicely on chase debut

she was never the same after the pulmonary haemorrhage she suffered on her second chase start

A 19% Strike rate with his chasers offers enough encouragement

Then there is the saint des saints side to his pedigree

        • Fil Dor impressed me today. Looks like he's improved for fences and he put Saint Roi away fairly comfortably. A real solid chase debut

it sounds like Leopardstown on the 26th is the plan so he'll no doubt run into a Mullins hotpot. That'll surely dictate where they go in the spring.

Surely you've been around the game longed enough to not trust 4 going on 5 year olds over fences as a Chelt opposition

The performance passed my eye test so that's good enough for me and I think it's fairly difficult to poke holes in that run. SR is rated mid 150s over hurdles and he beat him easily, pulling away further after the last. I couldn't see any excuses for SR.

Jonbon beat 149 rated Monmiral by 7 lengths - I'd have FD's debut on a par with that.

There'll probably be a couple that are better by the spring but he'll be a fair test for any of the Irish novices at Christmas imo.

              • I'm starting to really side with Jonbon. He's shown he's a fine jumper and I just can't get it out of my head that he's the only horse at Hendo's that can work with Constitution Hill. It's something i've heard in the media this year so apologies for not being able to confirm incase anyone asks.

We saw in the Supreme CH is in a different parish so I wouldn't trust any reports that he can work with CH.
Hopefully we see Jonbon on Saturday in the grade 1 with some different horses to take on who can give him a race. For me he looks like a superstar for 80-90% of the race but is a poor finisher. His closing sectionals apart from Aintree have always been poor compared to the other races on the same card and he will be vulnerable to a closer that can keep tabs with him throughout the race. Whether there's another novice that can keep tabs with him before Cheltenham is another matter.

IIRC one of Nickys remarks about CH before his last run is that he works the gallops on his own - as it isn’t fair on the rest of the horses who push to keep up with him.

I’m a little surprised the clock showed him to be a poor finisher in the rossington main...didn’t he jump the last level and stretch away.

                      • Il Est Francais could be going to Kempton for a novice chase at Xmas. 12s with Sky for the Turners, 16s for the Arkle.

Would be a very interesting horse in either division if he does go to Kempton.

I wouldn't read too much into that. 'Work' can take many different forms and if you watch the Supreme back Jonbon could go a long way with CH whilst being a very different animal.

I don't really do sectionals at the moment, as much as I'd like to so a probably ridiculous question but how much are closing sectionals affected by competitiveness of races?

With the exception of constitution, the only other horse to get within a length of jonbon was el fabiolo in the race you mention. JB was 2.5l ahead of kilcruit in the supreme so doesn't count as competitive in the same way to me.

Additionally, how likely is it that jonbon was either just doing enough or not being given too hard a time when in front as *clich? alert* "anything he did over hurdles was a bonus"?

Yep, the only thing I'm reading into it is that Jonbon is the only horse good enough to 'work' with CH.

Very interesting indeed. I was wondering when Tom would try to plunder some prizes over this side of the channel.
