  • Intriguing race for next March. Allaho "the most impressive performance of the festival" not IMO. Allaho is inconsistent. Plus we have Willie bingo. What do we do between CPS Allaho and Energumene.

CPS came to win his race in the Champion Chase and faded up the hill. Was it just an off day or did he not handle the uphill finish. He will have the same 1 2 against him next March plus Shishkin. So Willie wants back-up to CPS for the CC, either Allaho or Energumene. Energumene was set to go Arkle this year, probably because Willie feared meeting Shishkin less than EA. Energumene seems a top prospect over 2 1/2 miles and is the value bet @ 16/1 (early 25/1with Sky

    • It’s a real possibility also that the drop back in trip is motivated by the expectation that Energumene is the better horse over two and half and would be expected to beat Allaho.
Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more I sweat, the luckier I get.

      • I took Willie's comments as just him musing after the race like he does.
And the fact that there is no mid trip race at Punchestown. From memory.

The Champion Chase was also run at too slow a pace, once again.
Some shitty horses were still in with a chance that would not have been close if they'd gone a true gallop.

He discussed dropping him to 2 miles before the Ryanair so it's more than just musing I think. I have no doubt at all that he'll be able to lay up with the top 2 milers from what I see.

I think he’ll lay up with them but do you not think he’ll be a bit of a one trick pony like Ireland’s version of allmankind in terms of going a relentless gallop that sets the race up for the more natural 2 milers that have a change of gear?

Personally, no. I'd have him as the biggest threat to Shishkin next season. I was blown away by his jumping and relentless gallop in the Ryanair that destroyed a top, top field. He's very good.

I guess in the back of my mind I just wonder why if he has this blistering pace needed for 2 miles he has always been thought of and campaigned as a stayer.

                • He’s definitely the one horse in training I struggle the most with to get a read on as I’ve been frequently wrong about him many times before and probably will be again.

I also feel the Ryanair was muck as impressive as he was, the field was trash contrary to common opinion.

                    I must have missed that.

If that field was trash, what exactly do you class as a good field?

                        Explain how it was good?

Min and Samcro are both broken shells of their former selves.
Tornado flyer, fakir, mister fisher, Kalashnikov, Chris’ dream and fanion destruval are not and never have been top class. None of them will ever win another graded race at the festival.
That leaves melon who is generally more out than in but has a degree of quality on his day and the juries out on imperial aura who had a poor prep.

Allaho was brilliant, but I’m not having that as a good renewal. Competitive on paper beforehand - yes....mainly due to nobody knowing for sure how good allaho is but quality field - NO

                          Reigning champion

                          RSA 3rd
Another previous year festival winner in Imperial Aura

You can’t ask for much more in a field.

I’d agree that many disappointed, and I also don’t think Allaho is the best horse in training as the handicapper has indicated. There were countless jumping errors which for me were caused by the pace Allaho set.
Time wise he was quicker than both the JLT (actually slightly further than the JLT aswell) and Mares Chase and both of those were all out finishes.

But the winner aside how many of those in behind do you see winning graded races going forward?
The best two horses Min and Samcro were already broken, they were great horses but are now on the downgrade. I just think allaho fanboys want to make the race look better than it was. I’m a late to the party allaho fanboy but I stand by my evaluation of the race.

the plate over the same C&D was 9 seconds slower

As I keep saying I’m not crabbing the allaho performance, the same as shishkin in the Arkle - good winner but had nothing to beat
