Riders form is obviously not good enough or A Plus Tard's either. They're both untried to a certain extent. But have done what they've been asked of in a promising manner.

These younger horses improve and step up when they get the chance (sometimes),
In actual fact second season novices win the championship races more often than not. It's just finding the right ones.

Footpad's run in the King George is nowhere near good enough for a Ryanair win. It's straw clutching.
You really think a plus tard/ riders on the storm. Would have finished infront off footpad there.??

I don't think you respect the gap between a handicap and the KG enough.

I think you over rate it.

You lost me at "he got tired".

Rate the King George based on the finishing distances ?
Footpad was ridden to the line, Cyrname gave up and jogged home after the second last.
It was not a good or promising run at all.

He clearly dosent stay 3 miles as per every piece of form he has. They stuck him in the race against the best there is at kempton over 3m. He was bang there. And ran a very good race imo. Before he got tired, diddnt stay the trip, and the leader pulled clear. The 2 Infront of him are unbelievably good horses around there.

Put your handicappers/APT off levels with them around kempton. Would be a massacre.

Also imo he wins today and goes close to fav.

        • The gap between handicaps and grade 1 races is frequently underrated by people including the handicapper himself

          • But you need to look at how he done in the race last year not just purely form? He was nowere in the race and if A Plus Tard can replicate anything near what he done in the close bros he is bang up there and thats just based on the timing of the 2 races. Aso based on this angle should also have a huge chance

            • He's getting weight today and ought to win.
If he don't, then I think his boats sailed.
And he probably ain't coming over for the festival.

If he wins really impressively then I'd expect him to shorten.
If he just wins, they'll tighten him up a bit.

                Correct.
I think Scooby's forgetting who fought out the finish last year.

Comparing races on different courses on different days is a flawed methodology.

26 lengths behind the winner in third. Not much
And 2 and a half lengths in front of the last finisher Aso.

4 lengths away from tailed off in my book.

He has a lot to prove still.
                    Contradiction here....

                    Aso, beaten 1.25L?

So even on Footpad's King George run than you're knocking, it puts him winning last years Ryanair through Aso

                      On that basis.
                      Yes it does.

                        • Nothing that gets beat 26 lengths can be categorised as a good run, if you are for the horse to need to be a 160-plus horse in grade 1 company. Wrong trip though, but worth a try.

Yeah, I thought he travelled well and if he repeated that in a Ryanair he'd be in the mix.

I thought the same about Al Ferof for years

I'm not bullish about Footpad's chances, Min way ahead in my opinion..... but I've got 22/1 and the hope he can reproduce his festival winning form.

I wouldn't back him at his current odds, he's got it to prove.

I will be very disappointed if he can't beat Real Steel and Voix Du Reve though, Hardline is a bit under rated perhaps.

                            • He travelled well and that until he ran out of fuel, but not convinced he has much open company form that makes him "all that". If this race was off levels today i'd be taking him on no bother. Has plenty to prove for me, the KG didn't show him battle. Beating Mala Beach off levels isn't proving much either.

He's bled. Has it to prove IMO.

                              • Slightly different note - anyone who thinks Paul Townend picks where he rides for Willie must feel it's a slap in the face today.

Regardless of what he was doing at Cheltenham, Ruby would have been on Footpad today....
