  • Morning all - hope everyone is doing well.

    Quick question.. how does the draw work in flat racing? I’d always assumed it was just drawn out of a hat or something of that ilk. But I’ve just seen Mark Johnstone talking about how he found it interesting for the Stewards Cup that all those who were drawn early chose the high numbers. So is that just for the Stewards Cup where the trainers/owners get to decide their draw if lucky enough to select early or is that for all races and my hat idea is nonexistent? Thanks in advance.

      You are right, its only for a small number of Big Handicaps where, for the theatre of the build up, (like Bingo or the FA Cup draw ball-bag) they pick the horses number out and let the trainer choose their own draw, one by one.

        Thanks Saxon. I did wonder if it was perhaps just something for the big handicaps

        • Something I have always wondered

          When a jockey rides out their claim, for example, at the first race of a meeting, do they lose their claim for another ride at the same meeting on the same day.
          May not be stupid but I figure somebody will know

          • Something I’m ashamed too not know if anyone can help….
            where does it state whether a horse is male or female on the online horse info when searching online sites like Racing Post, At The Races, Irish Horse Racing etc?? Is there a symbol or marking to denote the horses sex?? Unless the name is obvious like Lady Frilly Knickers or Miss Splitarse I often can’t tell

                  You should see it after their date of birth on racing post site.

                  C = colt F = filly
                  G = gelding
                  M = mare
                  or at least that's how I've always read it!

                      And just to expand on FMs response, a female horse is a filly up to 4 years of age, when she reaches 5yo she becomes a mare…

                        No they don't as races are declared in advance so it's a bit like a horse being well in under a penalty. Can't recall the jockey but one early in the season rode out their claim but continued to claim 3lbs the next day too as 48 hour decs etc.

                        • Well, the title of the thread says it all... If you place an antepost Yankee and one or more of the selections doesn't make it or go elsewhere, does the bet still carry on for the remaining 2 or 3 horses?

                            Yeah it does.

                            A Yankee consists of doubles, trebles & a fourfold, so you would still have a treble and some doubles live if one selection doesn't make it, and only one double live if two selections don't make it. Three selections down and the bet is over.

                            • I would always recommend splitting Yankees and Trixies down into their individual bets when you place them AV. It's a bit of extra work but if one horse goes down it gives you the opportunity to cashout the legs affected if you're quick enough, and sometimes with a profit when they're antepost.
                              Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more I sweat, the luckier I get.

                                Can't emphasise this enough, been mentioned a few times by many of us but anyone new to punting or reading this who doesn't always do the individual lines, bonuses on lucky 15/31s are pretty much non existent and despite what people say about cash out, when you get the first two in the cash out offers on doubles are often beneficial to cash out and if any more go in you've the other perms for top money.
