World Hurdle Thread 2015

Ruby

Onto Navan on Sunday. Willie runs three in the Boyne Hurdle (2.15) and I’m on Briar Hill. He was disappointing in the Galmoy, which was won by Dedigout who resumes rivalry. I thought he’d improved at Christmas but he then ran very flat.

The heavy fall he had at Cheltenham clearly left a mark on him and he had a long time off afterwards. He seems to be working better at home now. John Codd, who rides him at home, is happy with him so hopefully he can show that improvement on the track. If he runs a big race, he’ll put himself in the frame for the World Hurdle.

Back In Focus has been off for almost two years. He has a lot of work done, but will definitely improve for the run.

Ascot Preview Notes

PN: Can't give More Of That any chance for World Hurdle and doesn't fear Annie Power either - both had interrupted campaigns . He thinks Zarkandar should be favourite. He has solid form and and he probably should have won at Ascot before Christmas when he pulled up in front. The more competitive race will suit him and he had a racecourse gallop at Wincanton on Wednesday and it was the best he had seen him for a long time.

Saphir Du Rheu is improving, but in my mind Zarkandar is a bit more battle-hardened and experienced and I feel that Rock On Ruby will give him a good lead into the race so he doesn't have to get there too soon.

AC: Saphir Du Rheu for him, won well last time, showed a lot of courage & beat a high class field

BO: Lieutenant Colonel is best staying hurdler in Ireland, but look also at Monksland & Jetson

Briar Hill was showing a bit of zest there. That fall might put him right back to the start again.

PN seems keen on Zarkandar given the prospect of getting a lead from Rock on Ruby, I think he's remembering the tactics employed in the champion 2 years ago when they put the blinkers on for the first time and he went off like a scalded cat. I would say there's zero chance of ROR being ridden like that in the world hurdle, they'll keep something back for the end, he's untried at the distance so I reckon PN will either need a pacemaker or look elsewhere for something to give his charge a strong lead.

I'd say Nicholls wouldn't mind getting Fehily onto one of his !

Briar Hill: He’s fine after his fall. I’m not sure he would have won, but he would have given the winner a race and that’s fine for me because at least it showed that he was coming back to form. He’s been showing me some good work recently and hopefully he can do it again. I think he’ll be fine. He’s possibly my World Hurdle hope this year. I put him in the handicaps too, but I think I’d rather run him in the World Hurdle and I think my owner would rather run him in it too.

Glad to hear Briar Hill is Ok after his fall. Seems to be a lot of horses going to the meeting of an imperfect prep.

Got to be tempted to aim Annie here now.

Was there a smidgen of hope in the announcement ?

More Of That galloped at Compton this morning with AP [McCoy] in the saddle and pleased everyone with his work.

"But when he returned to the yard he was found to have bled and as things stand I would have to say that he is now an unlikely runner at Cheltenham as time is not on our side."

Binocular and Kicking King type recovery possible ?

:) old vic knew

Nicholls is realy bullish about Zarkandar I've noticed, could be a decent bet to nothing at 5/1 ew

Is he better than last year. ? MoT had 8.5L on him last year. I wouldn't be worried about the other two thwt finished in front of him.

Who's your fancy OV?

I think the winner this year will again be a WH rookie.

I think he probably is better this year than last, his run in France against Gemix was quite impressive with him staying really well, Nicholls reckons he's come on a fair bit from that

He probably has improved from last season and so has many PN's horses. Zarkander is a positive in this race.
