Queen Anne but step up in trip on agenda

Frankel delivered another flawless performance on Saturday to justify his exalted position as the best racehorse in the world.

Racegoers flocked to Newbury in their thousands to catch a glimpse of the horse who has captured the imagination like few before him.

The colt demolished the opposition in the Group One JLT Lockinge Stakes, striding home by five lengths over old rival Excelebration.

'He's better than anything else in the world, head and shoulders above the rest, the real deal now and belongs to racing,' said his jockey, Tom Queally.

The joyous scenes played out around the winners' enclosure did not seem possible early last month after Frankel bruised a tendon.

The setback left his trainer, Henry Cecil, in a race against time to prepare him for the Lockinge.

And the ominous news for those eager to challenge Frankel in the months ahead is that Cecil is convinced there is more to come.

'His first race is never his best. I'd expect him to improve a lot for that as a 10-day hiccup is not funny. You can't make up the time,' said Cecil.

'He has got stronger and I'm thrilled with him. It is exciting and lovely for racing that he came through it all right.'

Next for Frankel is the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Then Cecil has the option of stepping him up to 10 furlongs in the Coral Eclipse at Sandown or keeping him at a mile in the Qipco Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.

One of the first to congratulate Cecil was his old stable jockey, Joe Mercer, famously the partner of the peerless Brigadier Gerard, who won this race 40 years ago.

'The Brigadier was the best I rode by far but seeing Frankel win like this is brilliant,' said Mercer.

'The way he did it, he will stay a mile and a quarter on his head. What is going to beat him? I'm sure he is going to match the Brigadier one day.'

Saturday's stunning display so soon after a training setback offered persuasive testimony that we have a horse who can stand comparison with legends of past centuries.

Let's enjoy him while we can.

Its that time of year again when the summer racing festivals are fast and furious and is back to back quality racing on Saturday with strong cards from Newmarket, York, Newbury and Chester. Bad race planning, possibly, but that’s another issue, the trickier task is to find a winner and some free betting tips amongst the plethora of runners in competitive races around the country. Fortunately, it’s the 53rd running of the John Smith’s Cup day at York, one of my favorite races of the flat season. Why? Firstly because I like York, secondly, its been a decent race for me in the past and thirdly, a key set of stats often points to the winner.

Weight: When sifting through these heritage handicaps, everyone is looking for a Group horse still masquerading as a handicapper, but there’s a delicate balance to the equation with this race as the last 6 winners all carried 8-12 or less. We’re looking for that fast improving horse that’s showed it’s potential, but avoided the full wrath of the handicapper to this point.

Official rating: 7 of the last 10 winners have won off a mark between 95 and 101, again underpinning the above point that we’re searching for a horse with class and on the up but still having something in hand from the official assessor.

Age: 9 of the last 10 winners were aged 4 or 5 (the exception, Wigmore Hall was 3). I think by now we’ve established we’re looking for a youngish horse on the up that hasn’t quite played their hand yet!

Jockey: Extraordinarily, there’s another strong stat here that the last 6 winners have all been ridden by claiming jockeys. Could it be that the class of a horse that’s still got a few pounds in hand offsets their riders relative inexperience? Those that have taken off a valuable 3-7lbs in the past certainly seem to have faired best!

Trainers: It’s no surprise that one of the strongest powers in the north, has an exceptional record in this race. Richard Fahey has taken this 3 times in the last 10 years with Vintage Premium (2002), Charlie Tokyo (2007) and Flying Clarets (2008). Even more interestingly for our bundle of statistics is that his last two winners were ridden by the claimers Jamie Moriarty and Frederik Tylicki.

Conclusion: From the stat attack above, we’ve got to focus on horses aged 4 or 5, rated between 95-101, carrying no more than 8-12. Of the 20 runners, there’s just one qualifier, AREA FIFTY ONE. Trained by, you guessed it, Richard Fahey and ridden by Shane B Kelly, who claims 5lbs! Too good to be true, well, we’re not quite finished, just for good measure Area Fifty One is due to go up 3lbs in future handicaps after his 4 length win last time out at Newmarket where he deeated 4 of tomorrow’s rivals. He’s run well at the course before when finishing second on his penultimate start at York, handling the soft ground, the surface it’s likely to be tomorrow.

So there it is, of the 41 races scheduled to take place tomorrow, Area Fifty One in York’s 3pm, is my bet of the day!

Good luck from Bodugi Michael

Simon Holt keen on Wild Coco

T
he feature race on day two of the Doncaster St Leger meeting is the DBS Park Hill Stakes in which Wild Coco is fancied to confirm her Glorious Goodwood superiority over The Queen's filly Estimate.

Trained by Sir Henry Cecil, Wild Coco showed serious potential last season only to apparantly go off the boil on her final two outings.

But she returned to action in impressive fashion on the Sussex Downs with a comfortable victory over Jehannedarc with Estimate (beaten about three lengths) in third and Hazel Lavery, who also runs here, only ninth.

Estimate may well be suited by this more galloping course, especially as she had previously won the Queens Vase over two miles, but Wild Coco should also improve from that race.

Hazel Lavery had earlier recorded a useful victory at Newmarket in July with another of the runners here Ambivalent back in third so the Goodwood form looks better.

Godolphin's Kailani is an interesting rival, however, as she looked smart when winning the Pretty Polly Stakes (by seven lengths from Hazel Lavery) at Newmarket in the spring only to then disappoint in the Oaks and at Royal Ascot. This is her first outing since June and she remains a filly of potential.

John Gosden's representative Gallipot is superbly bred but faces a big step up in class after two handicap victories on the all weather course at Kempton.

Richard Fahey on his lot

Thursday

I'm double-handed in the European Breeders' Fund Carrie Red Fillies' Nursery with Jamesbo's Girl and Strange Magic. Jamesbo's Girl ran well at Leicester last time but she has to step up again here as it's very competitive. However, she has a small chance. Strange Magic was very disappointing at Ascot the other day, she just wasn't good enough. I've given her plenty of time since then but she won't run if the ground is too firm.

It's the same for Miss Work Of Art ahead of the Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes as if it's too firm she won't go. She's fine, she's had an easy season and we're happy with her. She needs to improve for her reappearance at Pontefract last time but she is going the right way. I'd be surprised if she were up to winning this on just her second start of the campaign but we'll see.

Polski Max and Flyman go in the Weatherbys Insurance 300,000 2-Y-O Stakes and I'm happy with them both. Polski Max is in great order and the 6f 110y trip should suit him well, but he has got quite a few pounds to find with a few of them so it will be tough for him.

I feel sorry for my charities after recent efforts but the Sky Bet Charity Bet will be on Flyman who is in great order at home. The trip will be perfect for him, the ground will be perfect for him and he's unbeaten after wins at Nottingham and York. It's just whether he's good enough now but I am hopeful of a good run.

It's a warm DFS Park Hill Stakes with horses from Sir Michael Stoute's, John Gosden's and Mahmood Al Zarooni's all with chances. Cracking Lass does her own thing but I was pleased with her comeback at York and she has a squeak.

Wild Co Co wins ...Sunday Times would have been a nice one !
