2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup

Thanks.

I would find it impossible to back Coneygree for this race now.

Also news came through today that Coneygree now appears likely to head straight to Cheltenham having suffered a setback in recent days. Sara Bradstock said she was still confident of getting the horse there but that they were more focussed on getting him in perfect shape and also raised the possibility of missing Cheltenham entirely.

Definitely a no bet. I'd be surprised if they ever want to risk the horse again - I think he is too dear to their hearts and with him turning 10 in a few days I'm not sure it'll get any easier to get the horse sound

Djakadam is still the best bet in this race each way. Twice the price of Native River with Betfair. I'd sooner back a horse that has finished placed in two gold cups over one that placed in the 4 miler when the prices are as they are.

Not crabbing Native River however I think I'd want 16/1 Native River and wouldn't consider Djakadam a bad price at 8s!

Do you not think that Native River has improved though Kev ?
And Djakadam, whilst placing in the race twice, has also fallen at the track and won just one of his last 6 races, so you're really having the bet for place returns.
And I'm sure we had the discussion a while back but the 4 miler is becoming a classier race, recently upgraded and attracting better horses.

FM called it the other day, there isn't a great deal of value left for this race but Minella Rocca who won the 4 miler should not have been 50/1 until recently....

I do think Native River has improved and I'm not trying to knock him. I backed him in the 4 miler, in the Henn and in the Welsh National. I really like him, and think he certainly could win the Gold Cup...

Maybe I was exaggerating slightly about swapping the prices, but Djakadam is still improving too? He didn't have a great prep at all last season with the fall and Mullins has been really mindful of that, and now stated he'll go straight to the Gold Cup.

I did have a bit of that 50/1 because on the line through NR it was far too big a price, but in a match bet if NR was odds on, I'd want to be with the odds against horse. I don't think NR should be twice the price.

I also think NR is just a bet for place returns at this stage too .... so I'd rather take the 16s about a horse than HAS done it. I know NR hasn't had chance to yet, but 16/1 about a horse to come in the first 3 seems very reasonable... If they ran the race tomorrow and everything turned up, including Coneygree and Don Cossack, then I could see those, and the Tizzard horses ahead of him, but there are enough doubts for me to be happy with 16s

Argh so it's your fault the 50s disappeared ?
FM will be fuming.....

Absolutely. Sky take note when Kev Loaf's 50ps make a statement.

Valseur Lido all red in the Gold Cup and all blue in the Ryanair... someone should pop that in the each way yankee thread :triumphant:

VL put up as a bet by Lydia Hislop in her weekly column so probably the reason for the blue in the Ryanair.

For me the best bet in this race is DC at 12's and in again betting without TC. What's his price betting without?

Interesting. Wouldn't be sure VL would go for the Ryanair enough to make it a bet! I don't think 12/1 factors in the fact he might not turn up?!

Read the article now and seen Don Poli tipped for the national haha

There's a chance a few swerve this race, after the King George there'll probably be one or two trainers reluctant to send their horses into battle with what looks to be a machine, maybe look for softer options ?

I can see Djakadam missing this and connection throwing Champagne Fever in who will not be expected to do anything and could well run a huge race at a big price.
Already on a couple of rags in the race but any positive references about this ones participation and I'll be chucking a few quid on...

Champagne Fever looked like a non-stayer in that King George to me...had Lord Windamere eating up the ground against him last time too in the final strides and that was over 22f ... wouldn't be my idea of a flyer but at 66/1 you can't really knock it I suppose!

Certainly wouldn't go off that big

Sorry Kev he's an out and out stayer to me, connections used that King George run as an excuse to place the horse in races they had no other representative, the truth is he pulled so hard that day Ruby was fighting his head for the first mile, that's why he finished like he did and why he couldn't pick up over the last couple.
That last race was his first run for over 18 months, he was entitled to feel it near home.
He won a 3m PTP as a 4yo and was primed to go for the potato race as a 5yo until connections had a re-think.
He would be a very live outsider if he stayed fit and was given the green light to go...

Have to see if he takes up the engagement I suppose.

Anyone interested by Tizzard waxing lyrical about Alary?

"Alary was very good this morning on the gallops," said Tizzard. "I don't know when he will run but he's bloody good, I'll tell you that."

Alary, who will race in the colours of Ann & Alan Potts, is currently a general 33-1 shot for the Gold Cup on March 17.

Native River also worked for the first time since the Welsh National yesterday while Thistlecrack and Cue Card were quickly back on the work tab after Boxing Day.

"Two days afterwards they were back cantering," he said. "Cue Card may have paid for chasing Thistlecrack out in the country - may have.

"He probably didn't run to his lofty mark of 176 that day. Is there any way anything could beat Thistlecrack, as good as he is at the moment? It's hard to know how you would beat him.

"We were having a laugh about it the other day and I said to Tom Scudamore, ‘All you have to worry about Tom Scu is when you are at Cheltenham three out and look between your legs and see a white face you will know it's Native River coming towards you'.

"It's unreal that I've got these beautiful horses and we've got to enjoy it."

We will know better after trials day. Instinct is no. It he turned out to be a national type that would make trainers title interesting ..

Latest news on coneygree is heartbreaking for ante post book, absolutely lapped up the odds on him in several multiples before his comeback run, even after that with the emergence of thistlecrack I thought he was nailed on for a place.... looks like the bowl at aintree or punchestown GC instead....

Was just about to come on and update this. Sorry to hear that for you gjt. Certainly takes away some of the excitement for the race too, so not good all round.

Would definitely have been something to marvel at, coneygree setting the pace, thistlecrack tracking alongside djakadam and native river all jumping the second last in unison.... I've been dreaming of the fez for a while now...!!

Sadly Coneygree is an extremely fragile animal, I'm not sure the horse does come back now, just 12 runs in a 5 year career says it all.
They're talking about a return for Aintree in the Spring where there's every chance the ground rides quickish and will increase the chance of jarring.
Surely makes more sense to give the horse a little more time and head for Punchestown ?
