Liverpool Hurdle 2016

The race now known as the Liverpool Hurdle was established in 1974 but has only been run at Aintree since 2004.

It has Grade 1 status and is run over a distance of 3m 110y. Originally run on the opening day of the meeting it has switched positions with the Aintree Hurdle for 2013 and will now be run as part of the Grand National card on April 9.

Liverpool Hurdle Winner Profile 2004-2015

Previous Race: 9 of the last 12 winners ran in the World Hurdle with six winning at Cheltenham and 3 others finishing in the first 4.

Aintree Form: 10 of the 12 Liverpool Hurdle winners had previously won at the meeting. Prior to Whisper’s 2014 win ( he had never ran there before)  Monets Garden was the odd one out and he had finished second in the 2004 Mersey Novices Hurdle before winning here a year later.

Starting Price: Since moving to Aintree all 12 race winners have been in the first 3 in the betting holding market positions of 1 3 2 2 2 1 1 1 1 1 3 3.

Fate of the Favourite: The favourite has finished 1 U 2 2 3 1 1 1 1 1 2 2 over the past 12 years.

Age: 9 of the 12 renewals have been won by six and seven year olds – Big Bucks was the only horse older than 7 to have won since 2004 before Solwit’s win in 2013

Jockey/Trainer: The Walsh/Nicholls combo have landed 4 of the last 7. Richard Johnson and Henry Daly won back to back titles in 2006-2007 with Mighty Man. Henderson has trained Whisper to win the last two.
