Irish Grand National Stats

The 2013 Irish National is run at Fairyhouse Racecourse on Easter Monday April 1st.

We will attempt to narrow the field for the 2013 Irish Grand National by looking at the stats profile of previous winners.

The winners between 2003 and 2012 are tabled below:

Age: Novices have a good record with 6 of the last 7 winners being aged no more than 8.

Weight/Ratings: The greatest weight carried to victory in the last decade was 10-12 in 2003. 8 of the last 10 winners carried 10-5 or less. 4 of the last 10 winners were running from out of the handicap. Noel O’Brien believes that a minimum rating of 130 will be needed to get into this year’s race. 9 of the last 10 winners were officially rated 125 to 136. In the past six years all winners and 22 of the 24 placed horses fell into a ratings band from 130 to 140.

Trainer: Three of the twenty two British trained runners since 2004 have won. Johnjo O’Neill had Alfie Sherrin placed in 2012. Willie Mullins has never won this race.

Last Run: 9 out of the last 10 winners have had their last run with 50 days of the race. Six of the last seven winners have either been novices or second season chasers. 8 of the last ten had won a chase over 3 miles or further.

Starting Price: Favourites have a poor record with no wins and just three places in the last decade. 6 of the last 10 winners were returned at prices over 20/1.
