  • Aintree meeting Day One - 2023

Couldn’t see a topic started for this year - less than 72 hours to go. Some competitive looking races, none more so than what looks a fabulous renewal of the bowl. I’ve nailed my colours to the Ahoy Senor flag at 4/1, but looking forward to that.

But plenty to go at on day one, including the return of Constitution Hill, and plenty of rain forecast between now and then.

Zenta 2/1 antepost looks alright for the juvenile hurdle, uk juveniles are utter muck and on her form she should beat nusret easily

Agree on Zenta. Form line through Lossiemouth is strong.

Personally Jonbon is either a watch or lay bet in the opener, especially if he goes odds on.

In the Aintree Hurdle, I Like To Move It (who was desperately disappointing in the Champion Hurdle) has a chance of getting second if the ground is good. Zanahiyr was flattered by a place in the Champion Hurdle albeit it was a great ride for a place and plenty backed him to place at decent odds. Good ground hurdles form (including a few grade 2’s) is 1-1-1-1-1. Anything with soft in it is 1-5-2-18-6-6. Including some thumping defeats. So the rain would be a worry, but the ground is currently good, good to firm in places. Suspect it’ll be GS or Soft, but one to keep an eye on.

No Jonbon as yet & Henderson has declared in other races.

….makes sense that Maximilian has been given a severe haircut.

….no idea why, but Hatcher has had a severe haircut with 365 for Red Rum. 20-1 into 10-1, his form figures UFPPF3.

He ran well lto on the back of a wind op, and the winner of that race went in again yesterday with a 7lb penalty. He was rated 150 just over two years ago and is running off 130 (plus has another 5 taken off) so is thrown in if retaining that ability. All that said, I don't really fancy him and much prefer Third Time Lucki if Cheltenham hasn't took it out of him.

Lucinda Russell's horse looks to be in good form (another than seems to have improved for a wind op) but I'd be disappointed if TTL couldn't give him a stone on a course that will play to his strengths.

The Foxhunter is making my head hurt - anyone got strong opinions on it?

Eggs - do you go to Aintree? I'm there on Thursday.

….did QM stand for 25 consecutive years until COVID. Haven’t bothered since but I bought tickets for my son & his wife this year, so the Thursday tradition continues.

Had a little interest in Not That Fuisse in the Foxhunters on the back of Spectre giving him a decent mention for Cheltenham (didn’t turn up in the end) but he seems friendless in the market. Skelton also has more fancied Benny’s King & in his stable tour said both are better than average Hunter Chasers in a race worth 50k.

Also had to back Envoi Special only because James King rides. He did me a few favours on Dineur and I think he rides the course particularly well. I think he gave one of Venetia’s a good spin at Cheltenham last season.

Would you prefer 3 points against Fulham, or the National winner?

….I’d prefer 3 points against Forest to not backing a single winner at Aintree or next years Cheltenham. Sadly, one isn’t dependent on the other.

I'd prefer the national winner but I'm a villa fan !
