  • Big Race Thread 2022/2023

Thought I'd create a thread specifically for all the big races throughout the season. The grade 1's and big handicaps that aren't ran at the big spring festivals.

Anyhow, wanted to get peoples thoughts on the December Gold Cup at Cheltenham in a couple of weeks. Noticed Willie Mullins has entered up Ciel De Neige and from memory I can't recall Mullins sending over that many for these early season handicaps. On closer inspection he has some nice form tied in with French Dynamite and with that horse performing well in the Paddy Power earlier this month, could this be more than just a speculative entry? Notice that he's also entered in a listed race with plenty of others from the Mullins camp. 12s with Hills seems pretty big; if travelling over you'd think he'd nearly go off fav.

Mullins runners at Cheltenham outside of the festival are rare and his winners at Cheltenham outside of the festival are even rarer.

He brought a couple over for the November meeting and had a winner with Dad's Lad in October so maybe not the worst strike rate so far this term. With such a strong string right now it looks as though he's having a hard time separating them. Last season he sent more over to the UK than usual and it appears this year he's looking to do the same.

Yes he did have Dad's Lad but it's incredible how few runners he's had at Cheltenham outside of the festival. I doubt it's even double figures.

Unfortunately, no Ciel De Niege. Willie's decided to leave Haut En Couleurs in though which is interesting. He could and might well take up the John Duran entry on route to a handicap over Christmas, we know Willie isn't bothered about running a whole bunch in the Durkan. 12s if showing up looks reasonable, but it could be a big ask first time out carrying top weight against race fit rivals. Out of the others I actually like the Henderson mare Fantastic Lady, the form of her win was given a boost a week ago with the 2nd winning well. She would look sure to stay and very well bred by Network.
