Completely agree re the Ballymore potentially being high quality. I differ in the view re the potential quality of James's Gate. Maybe the heavy conditions did suit him more than others but I thought he was given a poor ride in the Bumper which wouldn't have enhanced his chances. Very odd to be run along the inside rail where the ground was worst of all but still finished 3rd. A shocking ride yesterday.

A year out, I'm not remotely close to saying I think he'll win, but he is one I am pleased to have in the book at 20s.

He could have just had a bad run yesterday and he did do the work to try and catch up with the leaders but he hasn't given me the feeling yet from his 3 runs that he is top top class.

Much easier to have my opinion of him not being quite good enough though so best of luck with the bet. I'm all aboard the An Tobar express for the Ballymore so will be against pretty much every other potential horse in the race unless AT ends up not being what I think he is.

James's Gate will run there if he turns out to be able to jump a hurdle, but like others I just can't warm to him, might be another Whatdeawant who will end up needing further but will run in the ballymore anyway due to the owners

I must be missing something with James Gate, he's won a bumper against a bunch of no hopers, a third in the champion bumper albeit in extreme conditions and a shit performance today. Genuine question, what makes him value at 20/1?

He isn't value. The Ballymore could be high class next year and IMO James's Gate won't be anywhere near the top of the novice hurdling class next year. He won a poor bumper first time up and the top 2 today in form terms didn't need to find much to be near JG based on his first bumper win.

I think one thing to remember is not all these bumper horses are going to be top class every year over obstacles.

Yes they are starting to translate their form from bumpers to grade 1 hurdles over the last couple of years but think back 4 years even and most were shit over obstacles.

He’s won his bumper in a decent RPR, backed it up with 3rd in a red hot Champion Bumper, then buggered it up in an end of season race through jockey misjudgement and I’m happy giving limited value to that run on that basis.

Can’t underestimate that he’s about the only novice hurdler for next year who’s target we are all but certain of.

That’s why I think he represents good value at 20/1. I’d have him a 14s or 16s shot as he is with most other bookies.

I wouldn't disagree. He was obviously put in a position where he well up against it but it was still surprising how little he found. It did turn into a sprint of sorts in his defence.
