Went through the card, and this lad did pop out when I first looked at it but tonight.... he's just ticking all the boxes
Lallygag - 9/1
- Want a horse that has race in less than 2 handicaps, ideally 1 or zero. Ran in one at end of season, Cobden was on board. 7lbs claimer this time around
- There is a race at Exeter, 1st week in December that generates some really good horse - Getaway Trump, Sporting John, Orbys Legend (used this method in '21 to get the winner of this race. Lally was narrowly beaten by Grey Dawning (1/2F that day) whilst carrying a double penalty, claimer took off 7. That was a huge run
- I was initially put off when I saw Lallygag beaten put to the side against Luccia, but its a Nicholls horse running in February!!! A month when Nicholls yard struggle - flu jab season... or what ever it is...
- Nicholls horse, always worth siding at this meet
Backed. Boy, that beer really helped with me picking out a selection
One to add to my Paul Nicholls multiple.
Thereunderthrufive another reasonable price one I quite like it.
And he's got a few favourites as well. Good record in that juvenile race. Knappers Hill should take all the beating. And his in the 4yo hurdle has an obvious chance.

Adding one more - Uncle Bert (6/1'ish)
Watched Cobden interview after winning the first and mentioned the ground was softer than expected, and had a a bit of mud splattered over him. There's a few horses in this field that are carrying a lot of weight, and most of them have been seen on good ground.
... whereas... all I'm hearing from the Uncle Bert camp is "please.... rain some more"
He's also one of few that has ran this season and I think that run, the ground going into his favour and carrying 11-3 could be the difference here
Another one thats was kept to maidens last season, and then sounds like connections wanted a day out at Aintree. Comes back, wins handicap by 12 lengths over this distance, and appears to have sorted out his jumping - he wasnt great last season
He's drifted out a little in the market, so will try and get a position tonight - hopefully he doesnt drift so much that it indicates a off day
but with this rain thats coming down now, I can imagine a lot of the field will be caught out and he's one that want soft ground - COME ON SAM!!!
With Cheltenham back today there are a few horses I'll be chucking some pennies at.
1:35 Jason The Militant 25/1 E/W (5 places) - Jason The Militant has the ultimate back class for a race of this nature, though does need to find some improvement from his previous two runs, that said, one of them was over a trip too far, IMO, so can be ignored. Three runs back he ran at Cheltenham in a class 2 handicap hurdle off 154 and despite his finishing position of 9th, he wasn't actually beat that far (only 11 odd lengths in the end). He's running today off 13lbs lower, in a class 3 race. He's also gone well fresh in the past. If he can put it all together and is revved up for his seasonal debut, I think he can run well at decent odds.
1:35 Great Bear 25/1 E/W (5 places) - Going to couple Jason The Militant with Great Bear in this race. Henry de Bromhead bringing over the Great Bear with Mikey O'Connor on board is reason enough to take a second look at this one, so I did. He's probably not going to win, he struggles to win, but he's a model of consistency with a shed load of placed efforts to his name, on both the flat and over hurdles, and even when not placing he's never far away. I'm hoping for more of the same today, and if things fall right, maybe, just maybe, he may grab his second win over hurdles.
3:55 Ace Of Authority 7/1 E/W - Really taken with his debut performance over hurdles, when never looking like being caught. Probably didn't beat a whole heap that day, and I'm hoping that experience will have his jumping improve, but he looked smart enough and I'm a sucker for an Authorized at Cheltenham.
4:30 Herewegohoney 12/1 E/W (5 places) - I would usually run a mile from a race of this nature, but Herewegohoney from when she won her p2p, so it was nice to see her win back in July, although she went unbacked by me on that occasion. She is pretty consistent and I just get the feeling the stiff track and trip will suit her. She needs to put it all together though. Her jumping has been sketchy in the past, so I'm hoping that holds up on her seasonal reappearance.
Not imaginative at all but really like the look of Lallygag today, good scumbag e/w price with 5 places and a decent claimer onboard so took 6/1 last night e/w
Only because I feel the trainer is really targetting races and although the paddy power gold cup has been mentioned, I think he’ll be better suited to smaller fields
off for a long time but they’ve been patient and I wouldn’t back many first time out, unless it’s trained by Dan or Nicholls. Been a target for a while. If they are aiming for king George then they’ll need to be winning this tbh
