  • Sandown 1.55 Very open handicap novice hurdle with a big pot that would be a long term target

Pasvolsky, On To Victory, Celestial Force, Herbiers and Royaume Uni have good form in big fields on goodish ground. A very open race like a tough flat handicap.

    edit after race:
    1. Herbiers 15/2
    2 Flic Ou Voyou 22/1
    3 On To Victory 7/2
    4 Royaume Uni
    5 Celestial Force

Good run under top weight by Flic Ou Voyou who is clearly a good ground horse

Everything suggests Frodon is a good thing here (apart from RH!) trip, going and the class horse of the race.
Yet these end of season races can throw up surprises. Mister Fisher has a lot of letters in his form but is classy.
I wonder if good ground horse Born Survivor may be the value here. 30lb worse on ratings but if there were to be surprise ... a trappy race.

      edit after race:
The two class horses pulled clear. Mister Fisher handled the good ground well and completed for a change. Frodon had to shorten up at some fences but had the class to just win: an exciting race despite the small field

      1 Frodon 4/5
      2 Mister Fisher 15/8

Too many question marks about Altior for me
Put the Kettle On has got many teashirts except a Sandown run
Sceau Royal is suited by course and ground as is Greaneteen:but the younger horses are more likely to be progressive.

        Selection: Put the Kettle On
        Value: Greaneteen

A possible battle between Rachael and Bryony!

        edit after race:
        1 Greaneteen 13/2
        2 Altior 9/4
        3 Sceau Royal

PTKO didn't act on the course
Greaneteen had run well in the Queen Mother so this was not a big surprise. Good ride by Bryony who saw the danger of giving Altior a lead.

Lower weights do well in this: Supreme Escape, Doing Fine (13-y-o), Plan of Attack
Of the higher weights Potterman and El Presente appeal

          edit after race:
          After Steward's Enquiry:

          1 Potterman 12/1
          2 Kitty's Light 9/1
          3 Enrilo 7/2
          4 El Presente 11/1

Kitty's Light the moral winner here! I went against it being a 5-y-o despite its last good win over 3m2f
I guess those are the rules but I'm surprised Enrilo wasn't placed last after that severe veer and bump.

          • Today's Munster National, Ontheropes now into favourite after opening at 10s on Friday when I decided not to play. I'm now debating whether to add him for the National Hunt Chase - any thoughts? Take out his 2nd to Monkfish last season and his form before that wasn't great. Could he just be a massive improver?

Winning today wouldn't rule him out of any of the novice chases, so you could back him today and re-invest quickly if you still fancy him afterwards perhaps?

Just read Saxon Warrior's thoughts on this race in his excellent Irish Planner so I'm happy to not add Ontheropes for the NH Chase and stick with my original thinking. Though will definitely look out for Hennessy entries if we wins today.

Reading that would put you off the NH Chase wouldn't it?

                    Yeah, I'm not adding him.

                    • The NH season is getting into full swing now with even Newton Abbot on a Sunday having some good quality on show:

1.0 novices hurdle: Skatman's comfortable win over Presentandcounting looks pretty good. Hard to oppose with Yggdrasil and Sherborne set for the minor honours

1.30 2m4f intermediate chase. Impressive Challow winner Bravemansgame's chasing debut. (was Aintree a race too far for him?) Opposed by useful established chasers in The Big Breakaway (needs further?) and Fusil Raffles (ideal trip but that bbv LTO?). Ideal trip for Defutureisbright but a lower class horse (outsider of4?)
I'm sure Bravemansgame will be a big player in novice chasing this year but I prefer Fusil Raffles for this one

2.02 Long distance stayers hurdle (3m2f). Ramses de Taillee has won FTO before and Blackjack Kentucky has good staying form. Prefer the higher priced Ramses de Taillee

Backed Ramses de Taillee myself. Went with the horse with a bit of class despite the weight

I'm still undecided on the 13:30. I dont rate Bravemansgame at all, but that weight advantage is huge. Fusil Raffles has experience and he's a decent animal!
He's definitely one to watch over good ground

                        Good - 111
                        Good To Yielding - 1
Good To Soft - PU, 3, PU*, 1

                        * went to soft later that day

Today, Good to Soft, Soft in places

Based on that, have to go with Bravemansgame but he SHOULD BE WINNING THIS RACE today

                        • Yggdrasil (3/1) ran in some HOT races last season, this is much easier today. Fancy taking on the fav here
                          David Noonan double today?

                          • As expected. Went from the front, ran and jump his own race. 5/10. Bookies are taking the p*** if they cut him for that

Tizzard is going to wreak The Big Breakaway at this rate, thats if he hasnt been broken already

                            • Nice win by Skatman in the first - decent run by Yggdrasil - should be winning soon

Jacob seemed very cautious on Fusll which gave Braveman an easy lead - jumped ok but never under any real pressure so a good experience for the horse but stiffer tasks to come

                              • Ramses left behind by the younger horses on this sharp track - needs softer ground and a more galloping track

So for 2.37 prefer the course specialist Ballyegan Hero

Pertemps winner Mrs Milner keeps up the good work at Limerick - looked routine for her in a competitive handicap
