  • Ladbrokes Trophy (Or the Hennessy traditionally)

Kitty’s Light at 10/1 each way (7 places Skybet and William Hill) is just an absolute belter of a bet.

He’s looking to be the youngest horse for many years to win the race which some might see as a negative. However, for one so young he’s incredibly experienced in these types of races and I’ve long thought he’d run huge if in the Ladbroke with the pace the race is run at every year. He wants a trip. Always has and always will. Look at his run last year at Wincanton in the Badger Ales (very flat track and the race becomes a sprint down the back straight) where he was flat to the boards before staying on remarkably over 3m in the last 2 furlongs to finish a remarkable 2nd. He must’ve passed at least 10 horses in the straight.

Fast forward to the end of last season in the Bet365 Gold Cup when he stayed on again up the hill after the last fence and was about to win before the leader took him out and carried him left. That horse was disqualified back with Kitty’s Light moved above him which was frustratingly only second. An absolute robbery but those are the rules. I was on him that day too. He loved the 3m 5f trip.

This will be his third run of the season after a good performance on his seasonal reappearance when second and then a personal best (arguably) when running second again (would’ve been third but for Shan Blue tumbling at the last) in the Charlie Hall. Once again in both of those two runs he stayed on powerfully. And both races were over 3 miles.

The Ladbroke (it’s the Hennessy to those of us who have some level of tradition in the Sport) is over 3m 2f and it’s renowned for being run at a fast pace from the start. Put frankly, his staying power makes him absolutely perfect for this. I can’t see him not placing at the very least.. but wouldn’t at all be suprised to see him win. I really fancy him here. He may even get his preferred ground of good to soft where he’s had his best results but even if it turns soft, that won’t trouble him. And it will slow his rivals down which may actually be a benefit.

It’s a quality race as it always is but Kitty’s Light is young, improving, has the experience in a big field handicap like this, is consistent, has got everything he wants here (trip, fast pace, likely ground, track) and is a double figure price with 7 places on offer. I think he’s an absolutely cracking bet.

7 places and 10/1 just makes him a really decent bet here in my view for a race that he’s absolutely made for.

Hopefully the forecast of heavy snow and high winds miss the course or else we could be in trouble.

backed Eklat AP at 18s and 12s, might have a small saver on fiddler and ontheropes. Can't see the racing being called off at Newbury tbh, we should be good.

Backed Eklat at 13/2 at the start of the week. Also backed Remastered at 18/1 each way at declarations, 6 places.

Rain was starting to fall so the more the better for my 2 please

Really looking forward to the big race today and I'm going to add Copperhead to my bets. The Tizzard horses were bang out of form last season when he ran in this off a mark of 152, whereas he turns up this season off 148. It's going back a bit now but his Reynoldstown makes him look really well handicapped and I'm happy enough to write off the whole of last season site to the stable form.

            Ante post bets:

            1pt EDR 16/1
            1pt On the Ropes 10/1

A rare bet for me outside the Festival.

But I think ANNAMIX is a decent value each way bet at 35-1 with BF/PP (1-5 places).

He ran well behind Galvin last time out and was a close third in the Kerry National before that.

Annamix certainly wasn't stopping at the finish in either of those races (both over 3 miles) and the extra couple of furlongs could help him.

Jack Foley takes off a useful 5lbs and I'm hopeful he will at least make the top five.

1.5pts each way ANNAMIX at 35-1 (1-5) in the Ladbroke Trophy.

Stonking card at Newbury today with some tricky competitive races. Glad to see class told with Ahoy Senor at 5/2
                1.15 Sompteux/Killer Clown/Kapcorse

edit: Previous winner Kapcorse came back to form and despite some greenness won comfortably at 13/2

The 1.50 on this card is more open than the big one imo. I can make a case for practically all of them. Usually you discard the older horses but Ch'tibello and Boreham Bill have such strong claims and are not out of form
Others: Black Mischief/Earl of the Cotswolds/Masters Legacy/Annsam - selection: Annsam

                  edit:
Earl of the Cotswolds at 14/1 showing it can be a good idea to back more than one in these open races - got the 123 with 6 from 11
Maybe i should have discarded the two older horses!

With Aye Right winning the Rehearsal more evidence that last year's race was v good I'm looking at last year's race:
Cloth Cap/The Hollow Ginge/Potterman plus the Mullins' Ontheropes

Something surely went wrong with eklat de rire

Was jumping well and travelling well then suddenly fell backwards and pulled up

Well I missed that one - shows you have to look at every horse - the 2nd in the Kim Muir gave Cloudy Glen a v good chance (good run in big field h'cap on the ground).
Cloth Cap made a mistake at the first so didn't get the smooth start of last year - maybe the weight did tell but an honourable run
Ontheropes did well to make ground into 4th - national horse?

edit: David Pipe has just tweeted a video of Remastered walking back to the stables on course - looks a bit sorry for himself but is walking ok

A disaster of a race for me, backed eklat and fiddler to win and demachine each way, 4 places and obviously he finished fifth !

Yeah horror story here too, convinced myself Eklat was the proverbial graded horse in a handicap, paid the price.
