    More on Betfair http://betting.betfair.com/horse-rac...010213-13.html

It's coming up to the heart of the National Hunt season and plans for Donald's star names are taking shape.

The countdown to Cheltenham is well and truly on now and it's time for an update on the plans for some of the stable's bigger names.

Firstly, you may have noticed that Clondaw Kaempfer wasn't among the entries for the Neptune - we were advised that we should give him more time to get over his race at Newbury and he will now be trained with Aintree in mind. It's a blow as he's a cracking prospect but he's still got time on his side.

Secondly, I am constantly being asked about the plans for Cinders And Ashes and it's looking increasingly likely that he will go straight to the Champion Hurdle.

Looking through the calendar, the likelihood is that all the suitable races for him between now and Cheltenham will be on soft ground and I don't want to run him on it again.

Hopefully Cheltenham might have dried out a bit by March and that's the day he has been trained for all season.

Looking back to last week, I was pleased with the way Peddlers Cross ran at Kempton. He didn't win but he had a proper blow afterwards and it should have brought him on considerably.

The main thing was that he came out of the race well - he was right as rain the following morning and that was a relief given he had a few issues last season.

It's now a case of finding the right race for him so as we can finalise his plans for Cheltenham.

It was obviously very frustrating to see Our Mick unseat Jason at Cheltenham on Saturday but I was delighted with the race he was running until he came down.

He will have come on a good deal for that run and the plan is now to head for the 3m handicap chase at the Festival that he was third in last year - you would have to think he could go close off his current mark granted a clear round.

It was harder to take encouragement from Weird Al's performance - the ground would have been softer than ideal and he might not be totally in love with Cheltenham but he has to be viewed as very disappointing.

We'll probably try and find another race for him quite quickly - he's still showing up well at home - and hopefully we can get him back on track.

He's one of five I have entered in this year's Grand National and, at this stage, it would be his main target. He is likely to be joined there by both Ballabriggs and Across The Bay - Fabalu would need to go up in the weights to get in while Cloudy Lane would also have the Foxhunters as an alternative.

Finally, followers of She Ranks Me will be pleased to know that she wasn't sold at Cheltenham last week. She didn't make her reserve and will now head to a mares' listed event at Sandown in a couple of weeks.

After that, she'll go to Cheltenham with any luck - you wouldn't think she would be good enough there but she's so tough that you wouldn't rule out a big run from her. Either way, she's been a star so far this season and you wouldn't mind a yard full of horses like her.

Take the example of Donald McCain's Super Duty (with four entries at the Festival).

On Tuesday, the trainer reported at his media morning: "I had been very tempted to concentrate Super Duty on the Kim Muir but I am starting to think strongly about running him in the RSA. Super Duty would have to carry nearly top-weight in the Kim Muir – we have done it before and it would not unduly bother me but we have started to become quite tempted by the RSA."

The very next day, amateur Derek O'Connor reported in an interview: "After getting the call-up for the ride on Rival D'Estruval in the National Hunt Chase a few weeks ago, I am pleased to report that I have been booked to ride Super Duty in the Kim Muir. Donald McCain is a trainer I'm very fond of and he seems happy with Super Duty. He looks as though the trip will suit him and I'm hoping he'll go very close."

            From another bored ...

Son of Flicka is only 2lbs higher than when he won the Coral Cup last year but we don’t know yet which race he goes for as is the case for the four horses we plan to run in the handicap hurdles as the ground will be a factor.

Bourne and Hollow Tree will also run somewhere.

Our Mick is an obvious one for the JLT having been third in the race last year as a novice. He would have be raised if finishing second at Cheltenham so maybe it was a blessing in disguise Jason fell off. I’ve successfully persuaded the owner not to run him again since to protect his mark.

Kruzhlinin goes for the Pulteney and I think he is a big price and good each-way value.

Cloudy Lane always needs two runs and the plan is to go to the Foxhunters but if we are slightly unhappy with him we will wait for Aintree.

Hellorboston goes for the Weatherbys Champion Bumper but I don’t think he’s good enough. Diamond King is also in the race and he was more impressive than I expected when he won on debut. We like him but Cheltenham is not the be-all and end-all.

DONALD McCAIN hopes the home comforts of Aintree can help ease his Cheltenham Festival disappointment.

Surprisingly the Liverpool-born trainer failed to notch one winner at last week’s Festival, although he did go close with Our Mick and Super Duty both finishing second.

He is looking to take a big team to Aintree’s three-day meeting headed by his three John Smith’s Grand National hopefuls Ballabriggs, Weird Al and Across The Bay.

McCain said: “We have saved a few for Aintree and we will have a good bunch.

“We had a couple of seconds, and Super Duty did everything but win. But there were a couple of disappointments. We are going through it and we will go in.

“Overturn was just ground. I walked it on the Saturday night after Chepstow and you knew your chance has gone then. He made the mistake because he was struggling on the ground. That wasn’t an issue with him, he just couldn’t get out of the ground. And we sort of knew, but the first race was a fast time, and you hope you will get away with it.

“But he will go to Aintree if it is good ground like it usually is. The plan is to come for the Aintree Hurdle.”

He added: “Super Duty would be an obvious one to go to Aintree for the Novice Chase (John Smith’s Mildmay Novices’ Chase on Ladies Day). And Cloudy Lane will come for the Fox Hunters’.”

Diamond king big mention from mark Howard

                Diamond King - Donald McCain:
Unbeaten in two bumpers last season and has won by 35 lengths as an aggregate and as Donald McCain says he has the pedigree and the looks to be a good horse.
He’ll start off over two miles but looks as though he will be a stayer and Donald believes he will end up as a three-mile chaser.

TRAINER Donald McCain has branded Corrin Wood a “serious challenger” for the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival on March 12.

The grey has been a revelation over fences this season, taking his unbeaten tally to three when ending Black Thunder’s 100 per cent chase record at Warwick last month.

Speaking to the Racing & Football Outlook for a stable tour carried in Tuesday's edition, McCain said: “His jumping is very slick and economical, but the handicapper has taken no chances in putting him on a mark of 156.

“That won’t matter much for his next run as that’ll be in the RSA Chase where he has to be a serious challenger.”

With one win in six starts, Corrin Wood, who also holds an entry in the National Hunt Chase, hardly set the world alight over hurdles, but he is beginning to fulfil his potential.

“He always looked a decent prospect as a novice hurdler but if you know the horse you’d realise he was always going to be a chaser.”

Corrin Wood will be bidding to emulate Cinders And Ashes, who gave McCain and owner Dermot Hanafin festival success in the 2012 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

Another novice chaser who is exciting McCain in the build-up to Cheltenham is Indian Castle, who scored at the track’s trials day last month.

“He has been given a mark of 140, which I think is very fair,” added the trainer. “I’m not sure which handicap he’ll go for, possibly the Kim Muir, but I like his mark and he won’t be making up the numbers.”
