When you have Hardline, Real Steel and Voix Du Reve up against Footrag then there is only one bet. Lay the favourite til the cows come home. I will be shocked if Footrag wins today.
Footpad had the perfect novice chase season winning all 5 of his races.
The horse has been a major disappointment since and his record in open company is 1 win from 5 races and that came in a weak listed race that he was fully entitle to win. He is 0 from 4 in graded open company and looks a horse who was probably just a very forward novice.
He ran over 3m in the King George last time and had an extremely tough race just over 3 weeks ago.
Dropping back in trip again he is going to struggle against todays rivals even getting weight. His handicap mark flatters him and is falsely high and based purely on his novice season which is now long gone.
In context of todays race over 2m 4 then the form of The John Durkan looks far stronger than anythung Footpad could handle.
Hardline probably should be favourite here. His 2nd to Min was strong form. His other 2 runs this season were over shorter but back to this trip and without Min in the race then he could be hard to beat.
Where as Footpad hasnt progressed from his novice season Hardline has and has already gone up 8lb in open company and there is plenty more to come over this trip. Won his bumper at this course and is a major player today.
Real Steel was only 1 1/2 lengths behind Hardline in the John durkan and would have been closer but for a mistake at the last. He gets 2lb from Hardline today. He is a 7yo akd the youngest in the field and shouls give Hardline a big race today and may well beat him and win.
He has already won a grade 2 chase in open company and The John Durkan form was also strong form. He is 2 wins from 2 runs at this track and should beat Footpad for fun here. He was ridden by the inexperienced P W Mullins last time but has the assistant if the Top Boy this time. A major player here.
Voix Du Reve was in need of the run 1st time up in the John Durkan yet still ran a big race and was only just over 6 lengths behind Min and made a bad mistake at the last. He would have finished ahead of Presenting Percy with a good jump.
A big disappointnent last time when last of 4. The jockey said the horse was never travelling and wasnt himself. That run needs to be forgiven but he could easily improve on the john Durkan form today and be a major player here. He thrives in small field races and has beaten Real Steel in the past. Has the ability to win here.
Gigginstown love to win this race and heavily target it. They have won 5 of the last 7 runnings of this race and had 4 placed horses as well in those races. They had the 1-2 in this 3 times in this period.
The fact they send Hardline on his own with no back up to do the job is a big pointér to his chamce today. 10.0 on betfair is astronomical.

Good call elegant. Hard to go back from 3 miles and i think the points about him having a tough race in the kg and that it was just over 3 weeks ago were key factors. I threw a few quid on reel steel after reading your post - much appreciated.
