This is the best column on Spirting Life apart from the donn obviously

Deputy Dan can win in the racinguk.com Reynoldstown Novices Chase at Ascot on Saturday.

Oliver Sherwood went close to winning this race 12 months ago with Many Clouds and Deputy Dan looked set to do well over the larger obstacles after a promising start. His career has stalled however, and his trainer, who has barely put a foot wrong this season, set about providing the right prescription to get back on track.

The fitting of some sort of headgear was the obvious move and Deputy Dan has responded in just the way connections had hoped. His schooling at home has been very good and if he can transfer that to the racecourse he will take plenty of beating here.

Ma Filleule can book her place at Cheltenham with a big run in the Grade One Betfair Ascot Chase. Nicky Henderson has not been in any rush with a good number of his leading lights this season and Ma Filleule makes only her third appearance of the campaign here.

She looked a shade unlucky not to prevail at Aintree on her latest start and her trainer will be most anxious that no fences will be omitted here. All the obstacles in the straight were taken out at the Lancashire course, and she lost concentration in her battle with Sam Winner in the closing stages.

As she showed when winning over the Grand National fences last April, jumping is her real strong point and we can expect Barry Geraghty to try and make the most of that asset over this trip. The subsequent form of Sam Winner suggests Ma Filleule belongs at this level, and she is on great terms with herself after a break.

Neil Mulholland can take another valuable three mile prize at the Berkshire course with Carole's Destrier in the Weatherbys Hamilton Limited Handicap Chase.

Although not quite up to the standard of the Limpley Stoke trainer's fast improving The Young Master, Carole's Destrier has progressed steadily and might well have finished closer than fourth at Cheltenham last time had he not laid up with a very healthy early pace. He has pleased connections subsequently and this looks a slightly less competitive event.

Rolling Star goes well fresh and will be fancied to defy top weight in the Les Ambassadeurs Casino Handicap Hurdle but Minstrels Gallery is improving for Lucy Wadham and may be able to take advantage of the 20 pounds he receives from the top weight.

Benvolio has been given plenty of time to recover from his tough race in the Welsh National seven weeks ago and he should go close to landing another big prize for Paul Nicholls in the Betfred Grand National Trial at Haydock.

Although he must shoulder 11st 12lb here, he still looks reasonably handicapped and Noel Fehily's quiet, persuasive style of riding should suit him.

Fehily should also strike for Harry Fry on Fletchers Flyer in the Grade Two Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle. He was a bit wayward earlier in the season but is improving with racing and ran out an emphatic winner at Wincanton last time. The step up to three miles should suit and he will be fancied to concede seven pounds to Ben Case's smart maiden Ballagh.

Wuff showed plenty of ability in novice hurdles last season and he starts his career over fences on a very workable mark in the Betfred Novices Handicap Chase. Tom George's gelding looks the type to do better over the larger obstacles and he showed his liking for this course last season.

Gavin Sheehan has some useful looking rides at Wincanton, and he should go close aboard Arkaim in the Thank You Wayne And Sarah Clifford Handicap Chase. Pam Sly's seven year old is a consistent performer and should be suited by the return to a sharp course after a respectable third at Sandown last time. Often ridden from the front in his races, he has the ideal pilot for the job. Last season's champion conditional has shown on many occasions he is a fine judge of pace.

Andrea Atzeni continues to be busy in his new role, riding work for plenty of trainers.

He looks to have a good book of rides at Lingfield on Saturday too with Pactolous (Download The Ladbrokes App Handicap) and Bush Warrior (Unibet Handicap) looking to hold strong each-way claims.

He is already pencilled down to partner Masamah for Marco Botti in the Daily Enhanced 'Magic Multiples' At Unibet Handicap at Wolverhampton on Monday and the nine-year-old has been showing up well in recent work despite his advancing years.

Charlie Hills has enjoyed a fruitful start to the New Year and he has an interesting three-year-old for Qatar Racing lined up for his debut in the near future.
