I think there is a bet in this but waiting for decs.

There has only been 1 six year old run in this in last decade but 4 left in at last round.

They are Djakadam 10/3, Wounded Warrior 10/1, Dogara 20/1 and Vasco Du Mee 25/1.

It is a huge ask for a six year old - as racecaller points out of the 3 six years olds that have run since 1990 - two fell.

Id rather be with a McManus horse - Like your style is the one that might fit the bill.

Djakadam will be some toll to win of top weight at 6...he might be though. Geraghty gave him a big thumbs up after the Hennessy.

Hennessy Gold Cup winner Many Clouds looks worthy of taking his place in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March but the one I took from the race was Djakadam even though he finished eighth. He is gorgeous, progressive horse and I am a big fan.

The ground was a bit too soft for my mount, Triolo D’Alene, who was pulled up. On that going, over three miles and a quarter miles in a competitive handicap at Newbury, ideally you need to have had a run under your belt or be very, very fit. Djakadam, on his seasonal debut, travelled well until fading in the last two furlongs. He looked like a horse who would improve an awful lot for the run. He might have been very unlucky at last season’s Festival when he fell and the fact that trainer Willie Mullins pitched him into a race like the Hennessy tells you a lot.

He won his maiden hurdle by 14 lengths at Gowran Park so there’s no track concerns and Djakadam jumps well and should handle the ground.

The one big concern I have is that he could be vulnerable to a challenger a bit lower down the weights.



Barry Geraghty takes over from me on Gallant Oscar who reverts to fences from hurdles.

It looks as if Tony Martin has been protecting his chase ‘mark’ since he won the Leinster National at Naas last season and Barry schooled him at Leopardstown after racing last Sunday and they’re happy with him.

I know Tony Martin thinks there’s a big chase handicap in Gallant Oscar.

Form’s working out

The way this race is run should really suit My Murphy. He’s a real strong stayer who’ll handle soft ground. The tempo of the race should suit him – it’ll be run a little bit slower than the Paddy Power Chase at Christmas where he finished ninth – and looks a live contender.

Michael Hourigan’s The Job is Right was fourth at Leopardstown before winning a Novice Chase at Punchestown. He’s been busy – but the form of that Paddy Power race is working out.

Christy Roche has dual entries in Swordfish and Groody Hill. Swordfish has two ways of running and if the one who ran at Fairyhouse turns up he’ll have a chance – but he’s not the most reliable. If he fancies it – he’d have a chance, if not – he won’t. Simples. Groody Hill needs to settle better to be involved at the business end




Jim Dreaper’s Goonyella is a real stayer but needs to get into a good position early or he’ll find himself too far back to challenge.

Rogue Angel had a very hard race at Punchestown when second to Portrait King and would need to be an iron horse to bounce back so quick.

I rode Make a Track for Charlie Swan once and he’s a really good jumper. He’s just below me in the weights which mightn’t help him but it would be a fitting end to Swan’s training career if he could go out with a bang by winning this.

No bother Mayo. I Didn't have the time for it but things improving on that front. Djakadam is out to 5s now on Betfair which seems more sensible. Sticking with my original pick and added in Sword Fish.

Mixed views in RP about Djakadam. Pricewise says if there is a horse that will win easily it is him but worried about Stamina. He has gone for Groody Hill and Goonyella. Paul Kealy unconvinced by Djakadam and picks a Gallant Oscar. Alan Sweetman also tips Gallant Oscar to give Barry Geraghty a first win in the race.
