  • International Jumps Races

This Nakayama Grand Jump win has me wondering about extent of international jumps racing.

The race in Japan looked more like a Cross Country race than anything else.

Anyone have a listing of big jumps races outside of UK and Ireland ?

    From Wikipedia

    Statistics

    Great Britain : 3366
    France : 2194
    Ireland : 1434
United States of America : 200
    Australia : 146
    Japan : 132
    New Zealand : 129

The Swedish Grand National at Strömsholm Racecourse near Strömsholm Royal Castle has become an Associate Member of the Crystal Cup for 2012. Members of the Crystal Cup committee will visit Strömsholm Racecourse in June to observe and advise on the suitability of the racecourse to become a full member in 2013. Competitors taking part in the Swedish Grand National in 2012 will not score points in the Crystal Cup series.

The origin of the Swedish Grand National, run in the beautiful grounds of Österängen, first surfaced as a general wish of the race-committee and board of directors of the Amateur Riders Club to do something special and unique at the once-a-year-only race meeting.

In 1970 letter was written and sent to the owner of Aintree Race Course, Mrs Mirabel Topham, to outline the plans and to ask permission to use the name: ‘The Swedish Grand National’. Mrs Topham granted her permission and sent the committee the gift of an imposing Challenge Cup, weighing 7,2 kilos, with an engraving of Captain Becher having fallen in”Becher’s Brook” at Aintree.

The first running of the Swedish Grand National in 1971 was won by an English horse called Officer Kelly, ridden by John Cook who won the 1971 running of the Grand National at Aintree aboard Specify.

The Swedish Grand National, Sunday June 17th, is run over two miles, six furlongs and 110 yards and has a total prize fund of approximately €33,000. The Swedish Champion Hurdle is run on the same day over a distance of two miles, two furlongs and 110 yards with a total prize fund of approximately €22,000.

The National Steeplechase Association has announced a spring racing schedule that encompasses 20 individual meets and offers purses exceeding $2-million. The lineup includes the gala Iroquois Steeplechase offering $400,000 in purse money and the debut of pari-mutuel wagering at the Virginia Gold Cup.

The schedule kicks off with the new Charleston Trials on Sunday, March 17—St. Patrick’s Day—and also includes the inaugural Dogwood Classic at Colonial Downs on Saturday, April 6.

The spring schedule includes stakes races totaling nearly $1-million. The Aiken Spring race meet in Aiken, S.C., on March 23 gets the season off to a fast start with the $50,000 Budweiser Imperial Cup, a Grade 3 race. The action shifts to Camden, S.C., the following weekend for the Carolina Cup, which annually attracts crowds exceeding 65,000. Its feature race on Saturday, March 30 will be the $50,000 Carolina Cup, a novice stakes for horses in their first seasons of competition over fences.

American Steeplechasing’s fillies and mares will be featured in the $50,000 Georgia Cup at the Atlanta Steeplechase on Saturday, April 13, and in the $50,000 Margaret Currey Henley at the Iroquois Steeplechase on Saturday, May 11.

The spring’s schedule of timber stakes over post-and-rail fences begins with the $30,000 My Lady’s Manor in Monkton, Md., on Saturday, April 13. The three-mile race kicks off the storied Maryland timber triple, which continues with the $30,000 Grand National in Butler on Saturday, April 20, and concludes with the $75,000 Maryland Hunt Cup on Saturday, April 27.

Virginia’s rich steeplechase lineup begins with the Middleburg Spring Races on Saturday, April 20, when the featured race will be the $50,000 Temple Gwathmey (Gr. 3.) The following weekend, novices will be in the spotlight in the $50,000 Queen’s Cup MPC ’Chase at the Queen’s Cup Steeplechase near Charlotte, N.C.

The first Saturday in May always is highlighted by the $75,000 Virginia Gold Cup, at Great Meadow Racecourse in The Plains, Va. The meet, which will have purses totaling $200,000, will for the first time offer pari-mutuel racing under the supervision of the Virginia Racing Commission.

The Iroquois Steeplechase in Nashville on May 11 will be highlighted by the $150,000 Calvin Houghland Iroquois (Gr. 1), the richest race on the spring schedule. The Iroquois meet will also feature the $75,000 Marcellus Frost for novices and the $50,000 Mason Houghland Memorial over timber fences in addition to the Henley for fillies and mares.

Spring racing action shifts into Pennsylvania in mid-May and includes the Radnor Hunt Races on Saturday, May 18. The Malvern meet offers the $50,000 National Hunt Cup (Gr. 3) and the $40,000 Radnor Hunt Cup over timber.

The Fair Hill Races in Maryland always are a highlight of Memorial Day weekend, and the races on Saturday, May 25, will feature the $40,000 Valentine Memorial, a starter stakes. Wrapping up the spring season is a return to Colonial Downs for the $50,000 David L. “Zeke” Ferguson Memorial (Gr. 3) on Saturday, June 8.
