  • Royal Ascot 2024 Yankee

We were unlucky not to collect in the Kentucky / Guineas thread but it generated some great debate and some really good pointers along the way… so let’s get our heads together for Ascot and maybe go for two yankees, one a little more long range and agreed by the end of this month and one leading up to the weekend before.

For the end of May Yankee, I’m happy to select the final choices based on what is popular and posted on the thread.

For the second Yankee, I suggest that PM, MP, Zach & HTR each pick a day to base their selection on… we could make it a Canadian if someone else fancies having a pick? …maybe FF as you already seem to have at least one live one?

Good stuff Morely I'm happy to step aside for FF for Ascot, UK/Irish flat is not my strong suit (some would argue neither is the US flat ).

Like others have mentioned Vandeek has stood out for the Commonwealth with Ramatuelle doing the form a solid on Sunday. He's been my only bet so far for Ascot I'd say 3/1 is decent before his seasonal debut.

Commonwealth been the target ever since the end of last season, connections have said he'll likely take in the Sandy lane at Haydock May 25th before heading to Ascot.

I'd be happy to give it a go if people are happy with that

I did back an ungodly amount of 2nds at last years royal ascot though

These are the antepost bets I had last year

      Modern games 4s into 7/4
      Highfield princess 5s into 7/4
      Luxembourg 12s into 2/1
      Eldar Eldarov 8s into 6/1
Little big bear 8s into 10/11
      Kinross 25s into 6/1

Those bets cost me my bet365 account as they all shortened so much even though none of them bloody won

Sounds a plan MP… I very much like Vandeek too so we should maybe get the early picks Yankee finalised within the next couple of weeks and before the Sandy Lane if folks want to include him

Count yourself in FF… feel for you with that list of near misses from last year!

If I was to throw one into the ring early, it would be chain of lightning for the jubilee, sprinters here are absolute crap apart from kinross and I think his optimal trip is 7 furlongs, i believe the plan is to come over and run in this whilst there's an entry in the Kings stand too

              Morley Street I'm in

Similarly to MP I don't follow the UK/Irish racing in as much depth as World racing but I'm sure I'll be suckered in by yet another Wesley Ward 4 1/2 furlong gorilla

King of steel 3/1 for the Prince of Wales looks a very obvious one

Varian has said he's going to run in the tatts gold cup as a prep for the Prince of Wales

Looking through the betting it looks a poor renewal and I can see him going off evs-5/4 if winning his prep race

He'd be my banker of the week

I'd be happy to lock in vandeek and King of steel as two of the 4 horses

Who should both be running end of may so probably best to sort out the other two and get it backed before then

                  Others I had in mind

Opera singer coronation stakes before she runs in the Irish guineas?

                  Quddwah/Charyn queen anne?

something against kyprios? Four year olds have an excellent record in the gold cup.

Don't like any of the british sprinters, so try to find an international horse or just swerve those races completely

2yo races I'd need to think something was a weapon to consider backing it as anything can happen in a 20 runner 2yo race

Throw all your opinions out see if we can narrow it down

Have you heard any different plans for Auguste Rodin FF? …would you not see him as a big danger to King of Steel, despite his flop last time?

Given his size I'm expecting/hoping king of steel will improve again this season

He takes that step forward he will have improved past auguste rodin, who is horribly inconsistent anyway.

A bit like westover who was a big framed horse too he will surely be plenty better at 4 than he was at 3

Can't wait to hear from Ward about this year's horse of a lifetime!

Having a look at the gold cup

9 of the last 12 renewals won by 4yos

2 of the 3 that weren't were stradivarius who was a bit of a freak as far as stayers are concerned as he stayed very strongly but also had a the turn of foot of a 1m4f horse

So only 2 horses have won 5 or older since 2011

Courage mon ami only raced twice at 3 and was rated just 106 going in to the race

                            Kyprios did nothing at 3

Subjectivist struggled in the leger but won the prix royal oak and dubai gold cup

Strad won the queen's vase abd goodwood cup and got beat in probably the best leger ever run

Order of st george was another exceptional stayer and had already proven it by winning the Irish st leger by half the track

Trip to Paris was an improving handicapper who won a weak renewal

Leading light won both the queen's vase and the leger

Gregory seems the only 4yo with any appeal, he won the queen's vase at 3, got outpaced by quicker horses in the leger looking a copper bottomed stayer but I'm not sure there's any point backing him antepost as he likely will find the 1m6f of the Yorkshire cup too short.

one to play e/w on the day maybe unless he returns somewhere other than york

Haha, yeah but they still catch me every time

When you watch the parade ring then one of his walks out twice the size of anything else
