There really isn’t a barrier bias in the Melbourne Cup and as you can see in the past 20 years, horses have won from the inside (Prince Of Penzance – barrier 1) and out wide (Vow And Declare and Shocking – barrier 21). A long-standing hoodoo was broken in 2021 with Verry Elleegant becoming the first horse to win from barrier 18. Barrier 15 has also only had one success (1973) while barriers 2, 7 and 20 have only produced two winners each. Barrier 5 has been the most successful gate in the Melbourne Cup with eight winners, followed by barrier 11 (7 wins) and 10 and 14 with six wins apiece. Historically, drawing anywhere from barrier 5 to 14 should give your horse the best chance.

    Barrier 5 , 10, 11 or 14 for Big 'V' then.

Clearly no real draw bias though.
Interesting. Breaking well is more important the draw so he can get prominent and sit there.

Willie Mullins gives us the latest on his two Melbourne Cup hopes, Vauban and Absurde ahead of 'the race that stops a nation', which takes place on Tuesday 7...

      • Everything seems to be going in favour of Vauban also.

Without A Fight gets 1KG penalty.

Soulcombe cant break from the stalls without giving 3-4 lengths.

Gold Trip probably goes Cox plate.

I'm using the winnings to fund my trips to the PP GC and Hennessy meetings so the Big 'V' will forever be remembered fondly. I think I'll reinvest some of it on him to win next year's Ascot Gold Cup as well.

            • Lobos the big V is a massive winner for me too now SA have won the World Cup - tons of doubles and trebles, roll ups, singles. If we can pull this one off will be massive. You have to love the vibes from Willie about V, he sounds so confident.

They've been putting down water also which will only help you'd imagine.

                  • The more I look at the potential field, the more I like his chances… I don’t see any obvious unexposed improvers or anything to particularly worry about from the lead up races?

                    • Twitter is saying Vauban flew around Flemington for a gallop. Cassey looked happy also.

He doesn't have a runner, the only O'Brien that does is Joseph.

Ahh right. Didn't know the final runners were out. Don't care about anyone else. No idea who else is running
