  • Royal Ascot Day 1

Final decs through for day 1

I'm sitting on ante post bets on modern games at 4/1 and Highfield princess at 5/1 so those are my main focus of the day

A winner from them and il be looking to have a few quid on Chaldean in the St James Palace stakes

I will generally be looking to swerve the 2yo races and handicaps unless I have a strong fancy as they are very often money vacuums

    Any strong fancies for anyone?

Also got Highfield Princess antepost, who's fairly key to my week. And I'm still really strong on her chances. Think any rain will inconvenience her much less than others. Although wouldn't be concerned on any ground.

Probably going to give Native Trial a chance each way in the Queen Anne. Appreciate he's second string to Modern Games but think he'll run well. And won't mind a little bit of cut in the ground.

Got an eye on Calling in the Wind in the 2m 4f handicap as well. But no rush there. Would expect around 14s even with the extra places, unless someone well followed tips him.

Agree Chaldean is probably the play in SJP also.

And Asadana at 4/1 is probably also a play now.

The one I noticed in the 2m4f handicap was Weston for Gordon elliot and Colin Keane

Just looks like a plot to me

Had 1 run for elliot since leaving Germany and now rocks up here way up in trip with keane booked

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest he's a very good jockey

Says more about the rides he gets more than anything

I don't disagree that on that on him being a very good jockey, but is the fact hes 0/48 around ascot not a slight offputting?

              What's he ridden?

If you think he's very good and you fancy a horse he happens to be riding you'd actually not back him?

You'd rather have Tom queally on because he's ridden ascot winners?

It wouldn't put me off in the slightest if I fancied a horse and he was jockey up

Westover, if i recall he had a few good chances last year too. If he was on something I really fancied then perhaps but having that bad of a strike rate when he obviously wouldnt be on no hopers just puts me off

Did he give any of them bad rides?

He doesn't ride for coolmoore or godolphin or a trainer that gets royal ascot winners so I'd imagine most of his rides are pretty unfancied or in very competitive races

Ger lyons has no good horses and hasnt since siskin so the chances of him getting on a good one are pretty low

Unless there's a list of bad rides that he cost horses that should've won a victory it just seems a coincidence to me and definitely not something that would put me off a horse I fancied

I'm no great Flat fan but.....

Vauban on his Hurdles form just has to win doesn't he ??

Willie could have another with Bring on the Night based on his form in the same race with Gold Cup fav Coltrane last year. Surely he can't bump into another one like him this year ?

Love to see Frankie rattle up a few wins on TV tomorrow as well. I see he's fav on 3. Bookies could be running for cover again !!

Vauban is very short to find out though is the problem

If he was 3s definitely worth a few quid but at 7/4-15/8 in a very competitive handicap happy to swerve him

The double with BOTN is 7.5/1

Can see a lot jumping on that.

Only strong fancy I really have tomorrow is buckaroo in the wolferton, I've always liked this horse, last run being a neck behind anmaat is not bad form at all if he runs to form he'll be right back there imo

Had a look at the Wolferton and almost everything I looked at I thought had a chance of winning. More competitive than a lot of the handicaps that for me. Even got down to like Raadobarg at 40/1 and I was still giving him a chance!

Couple of things..... I have "Modern Games" in the 14:30, "Paddington" in the 16:20 and "Bring on the night" in the 17:00 as a win trixie for tomorrow.

Also. It is SO odd seeing Vauban being lined up for a flat race after all that jumping. 7/4 is a crazy price though and I would sooner have second fave Dettori on Absurde (Stable mate) at 5/1.
