  • The FJ Weekly Punt

This is something that I've taken a bit of inspiration from the naiad for, and I want to see whether it would prove popular throughout the flat season, which is a time when the forum can get very quiet. Basically, it will be just a Weekly "team bet". The initial idea was to punt something of the boards as a group, and then lay off our stakes so it would be something of a free hit every week. It has been pointed out that there could be numerous issues with that plan, so we will forget about that as an important part of the idea, and just proceed with the bet as a bit of fun every week. Whether you choose to lay off your stakes if the price does crash is obviously still an option and up to each person whether they want to do that.

I've made a list of a few guidelines below, which are of course open to change if a majority think something should be changed:

    ● One selection on either Saturday or Sunday by that week's chosen selector. Selection must be posted in this thread at 10am on the morning of the race.

    ● If your selection will be taking place on Sunday morning, then please notify in this thread by 9am on Saturday at the latest that there won't be a selection that morning, to ensure people aren't checking this thread for nothing on Saturday morning.

    ● Winner stays on. If your selection wins that buys you another week as the selector. Likewise if your selection returns a profit each way then that also buys you another week. As long as you keep returning a profit then you will continue on as the selector.

If the plan is changing from originally getting a price significantly cut to lay off for a free bet, then why don't we just have a fun Lucky 15 for the Saturday selected by 4 different members each week? Can stick with the winner stays on theme, people can bet to whatever they are comfortable with and you have the chance of winning big as a group. Perhaps on the Thursday once we have declarations then the chosen four nominate what race they want to bet on to avoid clashing with anyone else?

That could be a better idea, I don't really know to be honest. I've seen a good few "monthly yankee" threads around so I wanted to make sure this thread was different from other threads on the forum, but having looked at the Yankee threads it seems to be all Cheltenham focused bets, so we could make this a lucky 15 type thing if that's what people preferred.

It's still the early stages of planning with this thing so if there's a lot of feedback we could definitely change stuff to suit the masses. I'm already looking at some of the guidelines I wrote out and thinking some of them could do with a little tweaking. Such as the winner stays on thing, surely if someone bags a 16/1+ winner on theyre first go then that should probably entitle them to stay on for at least another two weeks, rather than being dropped immediately if they're following weeks selection doesn't place. So maybe if you pick a winner you stay on for two weeks, and if you place you stay on for one week. That might be better.

…good to see the initiative. It can get a bit quiet in here through the summer so let’s hope there’s interest and expertise and even if there isn’t it could be popular when the jumps kicks off again.

I doubt I'd bet a weekly yankee, but I would if it were a single selection.

Sounds like a fun way to keep the interest going through the summer, a big race Saturday single with the selection up between 9-10 am could work

From the few replies I've gotten, it seems like the single bet might be more popular than a yankee/lucky 15 type bet, so we should probably stick with that for as long as it seems the popular choice.

There's other details to get right too. Would people only be interested if it was a weekend selection in one of the big races? If so I'd step down myself as a selector, as I very rarely see any big value in those races. My own picks would be much more likely to come in a Thursday evening maiden at gowran park

                OK I'm interested.

probably would prefer a single myself.
Eggs seems to struggle for 1 volunteer for the monthly yankee, so getting 4 a week through the quiet months wouldnt be viable imo.

I Would prefer a weekend selection.

                  A Saturday trixie?

Inexpensive bet that can hit big

It’s always gonna be difficult trying to cater for the masses I think for ease it would need to be consistent and I’d guess most people bet on the weekend racing too

From what I've seen, the single seems to be preferred to the multiple so far, so I think we'll probably go with that for the time being.

I'll do the first selection this weekend and hopefully kick it off with a bang. From what ive seen it sounds like it would be much preferred if it was a weekend thing, so i'll try and go with something on saturday or sunday and shouldnt have much bother finding something interesting at a price.

In the unlikely event that there is nothing of interest to me on Saturday or Sunday then I may have to go with something on Friday, but as I say that's unlikely to be the case.

Good to see you mayo hope you’re well.

riccirich I like the idea, worth noting ground can make a huge difference on the flat so later picks/selections if there’s weather around might be sensible.
                              Good initiative this….

                              FJ needs mayo’s million back…
