  • April ‘25 Yankee

Many thanks to Exar Essay for calling the March bet and we now move onto April.

Plenty to consider with my home meeting Aintree just a few weeks away and maybe more importantly Punchestown running from 29th April to 3rd May. I’d be more inclined to suggest we identify selections ahead of Punchestown impacting prices but that can be part of the discussion.

It should be a decent month but first of all I’d appreciate an April volunteer to consider the suggestions and determine the final selections

….the BANC seemed particularly popular with posters in March, Exar Essay selecting Kitzbuhel with plenty of nominations for Wendigo and Derryhassen Paddy around 25-1 mark. Jasmin for the Stayers also popular.

Looking at this time last year, looks like Teahupoo was in both March/Apr Yankees and amusing that he was also selected by Exar for March. Golden Ace & F2F were also included in April bet but for wrong races.

Thanks Eggs. I think that was my yankee debut! It was a tough pick with some great cases put forward. Since it's fresh in my mind, I'll list a couple that I thought were popular (including yours) that just missed out last month. That being said, there'll be a lot of fresh thought following Aintree.
      • Wendigo - BANC
      • Derryhassenpaddy - BANC
      • Marine Nationale - QMCC
      • State Man - Champion Hurdle
      • Jasmin De Vaux - Stayers
      • Majborough - QMCC or Ryanair

Sit down before reading this one

        Skylight Hustle - Albert Bartlett

Was my top pick of the early 4yo pointers and was snapped up privately for big money by Robcour. The race looked deep with the second and third very well thought of. Ran in a bumper for Gordon finishing close up 4th but most importantly showed a great attitude having made most of the running and being headed. He's not a bumper horse so I'm not bothered by the loss, but I'm hopeful he will make up into a really good staying hurdler next season.

….love it, Jackie. Only one AB market up that I can see and this fella isn’t in it but one to certainly make a note of.

….i know decs are a little way off but might be worth considering selections whose price could get a haircut after Punchestown.

We can utilise Saxon Warrior race planner for post-Punchestown choices, I remember him highlighting Sixandahalf last Spring and she went so close a few weeks ago.

…picked up this suggestion from Killiney. Certainly one to consider for the April Yankee.

‘Too late for the Yankee as I’m only just working my way through the Raceform. Having got to the Mares Novice and having thought through my pocket that Sixandahalf had it won I was amazed to see Air Of Entitlement now her down. Neither were stopping as the growing distance to the rest of the field indicates. The winner must be some mare and her breeding indicates that the 2m3f of the Mares next year will be right up her street. This has to be her destination. I have a strong feeling about this one and 12/1 looks a fair price in my opinion.‘

I don't disagree but if she's that good would they not consider a champion hurdle crack as Golden Ace did ? Plento of 'chat' about incentivising the top mares to head to the champion hurdle.
And would she be better that BDA, Lossie and Golden Ace, and she was only a head in front of the runner up, could there be an argument she got there too early and may still be the better horse ?
20/1 and I could see the interest...

I wouldn't be against sixandahalf in mares hurdle, especially if lossie goes champion hurdle.

I reckon we get the answers to all the questions around March 8th 2026...

                          ….i’ll nominate Derryhassen Paddy (again).

Lucinda Russell has just mentioned ‘’Gold Cup dream’ for him on TV, he won’t run again this season as they just want to get him started over fences. I’d be sure BANC will be target, 33-1 went last week but I expect there’ll still be 25s about when April selections are made.

I have to admit I was surprised when Kitzbuhel got in ahead of him for the BANC. It’s a cracking price for Paddy and you know his target is set.

…I’ve already got him in a few multiples at 33-1, including a bit of a daft e/w double with Senior Chief @ 66-1 who I like for the Grand National.

I also like Wendigo for BANC, two British trained horses might hold their price for a bit.
