Limerick Lace was 2nd in a handicap chase over 3m last season before winning the race. I wouldn't worry about her going over further. The ground seems to be their main concern with her.

    • Gavin Cromwell, Willian Hill website:

      Only By Night
was due to run at the weekend just gone, but we pulled her on account of the ground. We’ve given her an entry in the Arkle, but it’s not definitely her main aim. We’re yet to try her over two-and-a-half miles over fences and if she weren’t to stay that trip then we might send her to the Arkle instead of the Mares’ Chase.

If the ground came up soft for the Mares’ Chase over two-and-a-half and we had any concerns about her staying, then we could go to the Arkle.

      • ADV has lost her penalty for this year. She hasn't won a grade 1 or 2 chase since Jan 2023.

        Would this be correct?

So Cromwell IS considering the Mares Chase then, if he thinks she will stay the trip? I thought he had said otherwise before?

Yeah if you haven't won a grade 1 or 2 chase after 30 September 2023, no penalty.

I'd make her one of the bets of the festival at current prices, if I knew her target was confirmed.

              That's a promising update.

I agree 100% she looks really good. We just don’t know if she’ll stay that’s the issue. Has looked really good over 2m, Nara boosting the form as well. He surely has to give her a run over further to see? As good as she’s looked, I’d struggle to see her competitive in the Arkle.

Her only try over further she was beaten 29 lengths in the Grade 1 at Fairyhouse Jade De Grugy won.

That run against Nara was so much better than anything else she's ever produced I'm questioning the form, that's not to say she isn't a good animal but it could be a classic case of overrating the form because of the grade.
She also seems to have a preference for deep ground so if there are questions about her stamina and she does get her ground I'd be surprised if she showed up on the Friday....

                  • Definitely a change in tack from Gavin with his opinion then

I wonder if he's had the nod from JP that Limerick and Bio won't go

                    • I don't see the trip being a worry tbh. Ground possibly but it's never going to be rattling fast these days. Good to Soft would be surely be fine.

I’d say that’s a little harsh, she hammered Mirazur West on chase debut as well. Agree she probably does want it deeper but the race doesn’t look too deep and some softish ground would surely be fine. I’d need to see her over then first though.

It's always a guess up who runs but for me Dinoblue sets the standard and Allegorie de Vassy won’t be far behind, right now I’d say Cronwells is some way behind the level of form they’ve shown but she has time so may improve to that level….

Question for me would be would JJ or Patrick ride?

She's a home bred by Patrick and I think he has first dibs on her, which would temper my enthusiasm. Would obviously prefer JJ on.

Paul will ride Allegorie and Mark on Dinoblue, IMO.

The vibes I got after she won last time was that FFF wouldn't go to Cheltenham. Too small ?

Yeah, that would be an issue. A certain NRNB play if at all.
