On I.t.v. , the commentator - ( tom Scu ? ) said he didn't think Strong Leader liked the ground , but that he thought he ( s.l. ) jumped well ..

Ok. Cheers BC. Have to say it looked more than that but maybe jockey looked after him once he knew he was going nowhere and let him come home in his own time. Could virtually call it a PU really. Jockeys did say ground was sticky. We'll know more next time. He'll definitely not be going RH again for sure.

It was also said, I can't remember by who, that it was a wind problem and would require surgery.

          • I think it was the trainer on TV who said he had a wind problem that would need surgery

Is this something that can be fixed quickly and in turn SL return to full heath quickly ? Ie if it was a wind issue and he has the op, then can he still run in the Stayers in March ?

Yeah, if it's a minor one. He runs well fresh so could go straight there or perhaps have a run mid Feb?

Wind issue confirmed in Racing Post now. Looks like they hope to run end of January, let alone March:

Murphy told the Racing Post: "He's got a wind issue. I'm glad something has come to light because it was way too bad to be true.
"He's due to see wind-specialist Ben Brain at the back end of the week and we'll go from there. It's something that can be solved and while it was very disappointing on the day, I'm glad there was a reason and we'll get it sorted."

"We'll have him back ready to hopefully run in something like the Cleeve if his wind operation goes well. When a horse stops that quick, it's not through ability. He's beaten Crambo and Hiddenvalley Lake well [before] and that's the most frustrating part of it.
"He never turned up on the day as he had a health issue, which he's never had before."

So is he now cracking each way value at 25/1 ?

He was a solid second fav at around 12/1 before Saturdays run…..is the price an over reaction ?

Nope not imo. Poor record at the track casts huge doubts even over a place.

Before writing him off I’d watch his run in the cleeve last year
I distinctly remember thinking he might be an outside option until they didn’t enter.

Was a very poor Cleeve though

the horses from that race all finished 7th or worse in the stayers

                          Funny division though
for a couple of years its depended on how the race was run and at what track and they finished in different orders.
Teahupoo might be ahead of the field for sure but there’s a few in behind you couldn’t rule out as each way players with win chances given the run of the race.
Basically, there’s no 170 horses in the stayers division and all can run to low 160s on their day. IMO
