  • Forever William and Absolutely Fine Update And The Season Ahead

I think some of you guys know that this summer Spectre Racing acquired two horses to be offered as a pair to race together in genuine syndicated ownership with Dan Skelton. As you'll read below, we've managed to secure two horses that are very exciting for the future. Far more so than even we expected to be able to do. As a racing fan I know you guys will appreciate just how well we've done to secure these two and then still maintain and entry level price point for full ownership that is accessible to most people. They are being offered at less than the price point that was fed back was the comfortable and affordable entry point for ownership when we were syndicating The King Of Ryhope.

The point of doing this is to make genuine ownership affordable for people like all of us. The cost for these two would usually buy you something that's either unraced that will never win a race, or something with miles on the clock that has done it's winning. And also with a low grade Trainer, and not a Trainer like Dan Skelton. The experience usually isn't great and put people off. Whereas with this there is a genuine ownership involvement with good horses, and the opportunity to spend time at the yard. Plus, it's hard to argue that Dan is the most progressive Trainer in the UK. He was the leading British Trainer last season, and he's already well ahead in this years Championship, having already amassed 50% more prize money than his nearest challenger. Something we've added to ourselves with both horses in their prep races for the season ahead.

    The horses are:

Forever William. A very well bred 6 year old with proven talent, he has already won and placed 14 times in his career to date. Dan thinks there’s more to come from him by going up in trip over hurdles later, and he’s plenty big enough and ready to jump fences when the time comes. He’s a remarkably consistent horse that’s been operating from marks between 121 and 125, and running exclusively between two and two and a half miles since he went hurdling. He was a staying horse on the flat, and that suggests there’s still improvement to unlock, as generally stayers on the flat become stayers over jumps too, and the bigger robust types like him tend to continue to improve as they mature over time and stretch out in trip. Tiger Roll would be the outstanding recent example of what I mean. He’ll operate initially at two and half and then will move up to three miles as the season unfolds. Irrespective of trip, Dan likes what he sees so far, and he’s confident there’s more to come from him over the intermediate trip before we consider stretching out in trip later on. He settled easily into his new surroundings at Lodge Farm, and he’s worked as you’d expect a talented horse to. It’s usually the case that a new horse is given a bit of extra time to adapt to new surroundings, so he was given a short break after his initial training before being prepared for the new season ahead, and he came back in much later than most of the other horses came back into training. He already had a baseline level of fitness, so it was felt he’d benefit from the break, and then take him back up to fitness much quicker than the others. His race at Newton Abbot (20/9), was purely for fitness. He was several kilos overweight, so the race was to speed the process up so he is ready for his first target in mid-October. Finishing a close up third in that prep was unexpected, and a welcome bonus. He blew up at the back straight and was headed, but he was tough enough to come back on the bridle and finish his race well. He's have been no more than 75% for the race, so it was an excellent run given he was expected to come home in his own time, maybe passing one or two on the way home. I'd also spoken to connections of the winner before the race who were convinced they had a very well handicapped horse. His first seasonal target is The Silver Trophy, the feature race on the Saturday at the Chepstow season opening Persian War Meeting in October. Given it's sufficient recovery time, we then hope to take him to The Paddy Power Meeting in November. As time goes by, he’ll then tell us how much room there is in his hurdles mark as we push out in trip. He’ll have a big end of season target too. We've discussed both the Martin Pipe over two and half miles, and The Pertemps over three miles which really is very exciting. Obviously, we’re very fortunate to have secured a horse that can immediately take us to these big races. The key though is Dan Skelton. Dan is so good at improving horses, and extracting the maximum potential out of his horses. As such Forever William is likely to reach his ceiling over hurdles this season, so we’ll then go novice chasing with him next season as 7 year old.

Absolutely Fine. You wouldn’t have given his form a second glance initially. Prior to securing him he’d run in three novice hurdles and shown very little when running in the colours of his owner breeder. However, he was very backwards and green and needed time to grow into his frame. Those early runs though helped him to get an Official Rating of 83, and he has the potential to be a considerably better horse than that. He also underwent a procedure to sort his wind out, which had been holding him back in his training and on the racecourse. Since buying him in the spring and having his wind done, he’s really grown and started to fill his frame out, and now he is clean-winded he has improved significantly in his training, coming forward leaps and bounds. He looks an absolute picture, and he’s shown there’s a nice enough engine under the bonnet. And now it’s firing he’ll be doing so from a very lenient handicap mark. When buying horses at this end of the scale it’s important to find both value and potential, and he fitted both criteria perfectly. Knowing how to unlock that potential before someone else does is the key to buying well. Dan is obviously a great help in that regard, and because of that we have a horse that has the potential to run up a sequence of wins this season. His first run for us at Worcester was full of promise and very much educational. Help up off what turned out to be a slow pace, as a stayer that didn’t suit him at all. When they went for home he was caught flat footed, and he took his time to understand what he needed to do. Nevertheless, he ran on very nicely into 3rd when the penny dropped, and most important of all he showed he’d left his previous form a long way behind. That education won’t be lost on him next time. It was a race full of promise for the future, and now it's expected he’ll get off the mark quickly. His half-brother Hidden Heroics, also trained by Dan Skelton, reached an official rating of 135 over fences. Absolutely Fine has plenty of ability, and it’s hoped he can emulate Hidden Heroics in time. If he can get anywhere close to that I don't think it takes too much figuring out that we could have a very productive season with him. We'll make hay with him over hurdles first, but he’s built to be a chaser in the future, and expectations are that he can be even better when he goes novice chasing the following season.

There's obviously been a lot of hard work gone on in the background to make this happen, and it's taken a lot of patience. Not least to do it at the price point that many of us said would make ownership accessible. It's therefore a huge bonus to be able to do this with not just one horse but two horses. I think we're well ahead in terms of value. Both will win races, and they have plenty of future scope. Not only that the syndicate will go to big Saturday races, and we hope to run at the end of season Festivals. I've looked long and hard at what is available in the market and I'm confident that we're doing something here that all of the others don't and haven't. It beats any alternative I can find hands down.

It would obviously be fantastic to get a really good Fat Jockey contingent involved, particularly as I know a number of you guys had expressed and interest at this level. The cost details are below, and there are options in terms of how to pay to try to make this accessible to everyone. I can't even begin to tell you just how much ownership adds to my own horse racing experience each season, and I hope what we've done here will make that possible for you too. These are a few of the key points, but if you want to ask any additional questions either send me a DM or Email me.

    1. It's either a one-off payment of £899, or alternatively £299 and £76 per month to buy your share in both horses. This includes all costs for the season through to the end of May 2025. You will not be asked to pay anything else. There is no risk whatsoever.

    2. You will receive your share of prizemoney, and any future re-sale value should either of the horses be sold.

    3. This is genuine ownership with all the experience and benefits you’d expect. It isn’t the microshare type offering where you are essentially part of something with thousands of others.

    4. You’ll get to spend time at the yard with Dan, and with your horses. Plus, access to the very many good horses in the Yard. The facilities are first class, as is the Trainer himself.

Communication is continual with regards your horses, which will be both in written and video format. There will also be some live video sessions through the year. And there will also be discussions about other horses in the yard. there's also an owners discussion group which is very lively and lot's of good information is shared.

So for those of you interested to find out more either send me a direct message or send an email to spectreracingsyndicate@gmail.com

And so you guys know, if you do enquire there is no pressure to buy. It has to be right for you and the timing has to be right too. My whole purpose for doing this was because of the feedback from a considerable number of people on here that if I could do something like this at this kind of amount, then it would make it possible for them to get involved in ownership. Hopefully what I've done here is exceed any expectations anyone could have?

    Thanks Paul (Spectre)
Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more I sweat, the luckier I get.

I can vouch for everything Spectre says above. I’m involved in this Syndicate & everything about it’s absolutely Superb! Really looking forward to the season ahead & having the opportunity to hopefully cheer on our own runner in the big meet at HQ is something I never thought I’d be able to do!

The “Owners Discussion group” is way way more than that too - some of the tipping on there has been unreal.

Know a few from here are in it already too & been great to put a few User IDs to names. Hoping to make it to one of the yard visits soon

Just to say as well to anyone who's interested that my DMs are open if there's any aspect you want to discuss with a syndicate member. I know a couple of you reached out last time and I'm happy to provide any further context to yourselves/anyone else who's interested.

It has been a brilliant experience for me so far as a newbie into the ownership ranks and the season hasn't really got started yet. I have to say, when I paid the initial fee, I wasn't expecting to get driven to the gallops by Dan as part of a stable tour and then just be chilling in the back seat while he was debriefing with Harry who was cantering back to the stables so that was a pretty cool moment! I came in more excited about Absolutely Fine than Forever William but that performance by FW and knowing what should be there moving forwards is just incredible for the price so hopefully they both stay sound now and we can just enjoy the season

What Odin said (only I was sat in the front).
I've been in syndicates before with some guys on here and I really enjoyed those but this is a big step up.
I'm still a learner at this game and the info and reasoning to everything that is put on the owners chat is fantastic. But for me the best thing is the friendliness of everyone involved. Friday at Newton Abbot followed by the owners dinner in Warwickshire and Saturday at Dan's yard were an absolute pleasure to be involved in. I can't wait to get back with everyone at Chepstow and hopefully a few more of you as well.

Ill second what Odin said above (Lovely to meet you by the way mate).

A few of us met for food and a beer on Friday night and had a lovely evening before the Stable Tour (That was more than a normal stable tour) on the Saturday Morning.

Dan is sound .... Basically like one of the lads so chilled out but clearly super knowledgeable. We had a fabulous morning.

Both horses he seems genuinely excited about even more so after Forever Williams performance Friday which i think shocked all!!

Paul (Spectre) it goes without saying is a top bloke and clearly has a awesome relationship with Dan (Meaning we got to see more than most!!!). He keeps you well
informed and even bangs in the odd winning tip here and there which is worth the monthly cost on its own :-).

Its my first venture into owning a very very small part of a horse but you genuinely feel like "They are yours" when you meet them.

Come on FW and AF :-)

I know you can't make it next weekend MIJ, but the next one is coming up on the 19th October. Dinner the night before for those that can make that, and Stratford is just down the road and there's racing on that Saturday and Dan will have runners, so a few of us will be heading there to extend the day. There will be further ones this season too but dates aren't yet confirmed. I'll put some details on the owners group

I think we are potentially going to be fortunate to have some of the horses running at Cheltenham this season which is the dream for all of us, and assuming all goes as planned two of them will go to the Festival itself, which is incredibly exciting. Forever William being one of them.

As one of the owners of The King of Ryhope, I can’t speak highly enough about the syndicate set up and of Paul’s management. Last season, win or lose, we had some memorable days… will always remember brushing past JP McManus in the parade ring at Aintree and talking form over lunch with Kim Bailey at Ascot. Dan and his team always have time for you and this with Paul’s regular updates and video feeds makes the whole experience truly first class. Looking forward to another exciting season ahead with TKOR!

I'm involved with Spectre One aka Tango - the beast yet to be unleashed - but from day 1 the communication and transparency from Paul and all involved has been top notch - great access into the yard via reports and videos of the horse at work and from Dan himself. As a first timer into this I can't recommend the Spectre Racing Syndicate highly enough and am looking forward to catching up with some of the crew at Down Royal in a few weeks as so far i have only been able to look on in great envy at the stable tours, dinners and racecourse visits. It's not just buying into a horse - it's buying into a great wee community and i look forward to the big days out to come!

I am Odin's dad, I take the credit for his interest in racing, but cant take the credit for all his knowledge in racing. These days I don't have much time to spend on racing but find the banter of the syndicate group great to keep me up to speed with all things National Hunt which is my number one sporting love!

I am new to all this syndicate lark but have found the experience so far to be amazing. I did have a dabble at Racehorse ownership with a Manchester Evening News syndicate in the late eighties but that was nothing compared to this.

Seeing the horses at Dan Skelton's yard on Saturday was a truly great experience, the love and care the stable staff give to the horses is out of this world. Outside of this we receive regular video feeds and updates about the horses. The racecourse experience is enhanced by hospitality at the course and owners badges (depending on demand obviously to go to a particular meeting)

Lots to look forward to with Absolutely Fine in lower grades and Forever William currently in Class 3 with the potential to move up to being a Class 2 performer judging on its run at Newton Abbot.

I would recommend the syndicate to anyone wishing to grab a share and have a bit of fun, Paul keeps us up to date with absolutely everything and as already said the odd tip here or there to boot!

Just to ask a question for FJ folk generally......

There was mention of it not being a microshare, but a proper share.

But I may have missed reading, on how many shares are there at £899 for the 2 horses?

...and how does that play out re getting tickets to watch them race, owners area access etc?

That could help clarify things a little more for FJ members

Also involved in this and echo some of the comments above. Paul knows his stuff as most on here will be aware by now. But on top of that he's very commited to making the experience as enjoyable as possible for all involved. The love for racing is clear and infectious. The social side of the syndicate seems very good and the discussion has been very active. All involved seem like minded and knowledgeable, which is good. Think the price point probably allows for that, as well as the link to this place. And the meet ups all seem to have gone well and been a lot of fun also.

I've not actually been able to make either horses seasonal debut, although the offers were there. And I couldn't make the stable tour either. So I'm a virtual owner so far Still enjoyed all the chat though and the regular photos and video updates. Including forwarded videos from Dan himself, from those in the owners areas on racedays and those attending the stable tour.

I'll answer the above from Saxon Warrior but let me know if anyone wants to answer better. Price was for a 1 of 150 shares in both horses (combined). It's a proper ownership scenario compared with any low share % type set ups I've previously read. And covers the ownership and first years training fees.

Not seen any issues with owners badges on race days to date but it's a reasonably small group of seemingly working aged people, a lot of whom presumably have other commitments. As well as the locations involved in the races... Impossible to guarantee badges they with 150 shares though of course. And when both horses are sold out and you're talking about the Cheltenham festival there's no doubt the owners badges are going to have to go into a ballot. I'd have no problem watching those from public areas though (don't take this as me opting out the ballot Paul )

Correct Sax. It's not a microshare, which are effectively clubs. The microshare type operations are the registered owner themselves.

The are 150 owners in the two horses, and each share is genuine ownership. That includes therefore a share in all prizemoney (both have already won prizemoney!!), and any future proceeds at the sales. Not that the intention is to sell. It's safe to say that Dan has already increased the value of both horses though, and will continue to do so. It's safe to say that horses that can run and potentially win at Cheltenham, plus go on to run at the Festival will increase significantly in value. As will horses that win when they haven't done previously. The cost of ownership won't change though.

I think you know this already but these are very much social syndicates, and it's not to take money out of people's pockets, and aren't being run to make profits. They may be in the future, but that's not the case right now. Along with buying the right horses, that ensures that ownership is the best value that can be found. If someone can find anything better I'd be shocked. I certainly can't, and as you'd expect I've looked pretty hard.

I think the most important aspect though is communication and access. I'm sure you've already ready the comments from others who have very kindly posted on this thread. As you've seen there is a real Fat Jockey Owners Community already. And there are lots more owners across the horses that haven't posted too. The guys are genuinely involved, not just with Spectre Racing, but with Dan too, who is very generous with his time for all of us. We get a level of access at the yard that others don't, and highly likely don't elsewhere. Probably what shines out most of all though is just the love for the horses from everyone at the yard. The key to all of this though is Dan who loves what we're doing, and is actively facilitating helping to get the ordinary racing fan like us involved. And all credit to him for doing so.

Most racecourses will give 20 owners badges, and on request often more are made available. Plus the yard may have access to additional badges too. If a race is oversubscribed then there is a ballot for tickets, and I'll request general admission badges for everyone else. The reality though is that generally it's only a percentage of owners that are able to make it. Big race meeting are obviously more tricky, but we're all realistic about those days. And quite frankly having horses that can even be considered for those days, let alone run and win is dreamland stuff. The horses that do that aren't entry level like these are. They're seriously expensive, and usually only the wealthy can buy or own shares in them. Definitely out of the reach of most of us.

The most important point of all though is that the cost is an all in cost that includes everything. The purchase, the sales commission, the stabling, the vetting, the transport, the training, the upkeep, the entry costs, and the vet costs, and anything else anyone can think of that I've forgotten as I'm writing. All the costs are itemised in the contract. Nothing is hidden, or covered under one big number. For example Absolutely Fine has had a wind op (not cheap!), and no costs would be passed on to the owners. Any additional vet liabilities are not the responsibility of the individual owners. There is no risk. The cost is the cost. That's it. Essentially people like you and I, and everyone else here, the ordinary racing fan has access to something that isn't usually possible I can't tell you just how much it enhances the racing season for everyone involved.

Of course the timing and the opportunity has to be right, but I can't recommend enough to any racing fan getting directly involved with ownership at some point in their life. There are pitfalls, and I know several friends who have got involved with horses at a low level and it's not been the best experience. It's put them off. Poor horses on the downgrade that can't win, or poor horses that are unraced with lots of promises of what may be, but frankly shouldn't have been raced at all. All with low grade trainers who just need to fill boxes and sell horses that are essentially liabilities if they don't. I love every facet of racing, and that's not the experience I want people to have. Quite the opposite. First and foremost it should be fun, and access should be regular and easy. But most important it should be with horses that can win. Sadly those poor horses described were also more expensive than is proposed here! I'm lucky to have experienced racing as an owner, and I want it to be possible for everyone else to be able to share that same experience. I know how passionate everyone here is about there racing, and I hope to be able to do my bit to give everyone what I've been able to have.

I think most people who have been on Fat Jockey for any length of time know I'm doing this for those reasons. To prove what is possible, and to make sure that people are neither ripped off, or have a bad experience. But most of all to make it possible to get involved in good horses, and horses that can win at a cost that doesn't break the bank. One £10 each way bet a week pays for two good horses, and I'm not sure i or anyone else can do any better than that!!!
Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more I sweat, the luckier I get.

Echo everything that has been said so far.

I’m also one of the owners of The King of Ryhope (Ryan)

Betting with a focus on antepost, with the help of this forum has led to some decent wins over the years. Likewise there are certain races that hold such joy for me, irrelevant of any financial gain. Sprinter Sacre’s comeback win in 2016. Annie Powers redemption in winning the Champion Hurdle that same year.

But honestly being there to watch Ryan on his chase debut at Chepstow last season, and win. Is up there with the best feelings I’ve had with horse racing. Hands down. Though we didn’t get that winning feeling again, we had some ride through the season:
                              • Winning chase debut
                              • 5 runs that season
                              • Ran in 3 Saturday graded chases
                              • Ran a huge race and unlucky to not finish closer than the 3L defeat in the Reynoldstown at Ascot, coming out as the eye catcher and one to follow in both ATR, Racing Post and others
                              • Going off favourite at Aintree on Grand National day, the race before the big one
We all mention that buzz the night before Cheltenham kicks off each season. Imagine that same feeling, when it’s a horse you have e an involvement in.
