    • 'If Gino is going to lose his maiden over fences, it’s got to be worthwhile, otherwise he’d be better off as a novice next year.'

I can't get my head around this. What is he trying to say ? Is it in the context of the match up with Ballyburn ?

….sounds like it. A bit pointless losing his maiden status against ‘trees’, he’s better seeing where Sir Gino stands against top tier Irish. If he’s beaten, it’ll mean stick to hurdles for the remainder of this season.

          Yep, exactly that imo

          • Cheers guys. Yeah get it now. Wonder if Ballyburn will go back over hurdles if he's stuffed??

If he does it could be the Stayers, not quick enough for 2m at the top level imo.
Think it more likely that the BANC would be his race though if he’s stuffed.

I think it’s far more about prize money than opposition. I.e if he’s going to lose his novice status then the money needs to be worth it as he can make a pretty penny staying over hurdles.

Fair point, thinking about opposition and forgetting that it’s a nice pot!!
And yes, will be opportunity for decent pots hurdling.

Don’t think it’s got anything to do with prize money or certainly very little imo.

Henderson comes here with a lot of his best novice chasers over the years. The only reason his novice chase career has had a delayed start is because of the fragility to his stablemate. He picked up a really poor grade 1 prize but again, that was more to do with doubts over Constitution Hill than prize money. If C Hill comes back to his best Sir Gino ain’t getting near him so can start his novice chase career.

Henderson clearly would rather have a champion hurdle runner than novice chaser it seems, his record in the race speaks for itself, the winning most trainer.

You miss my point. I was merely referring to why he is starting him in the Wayward Lad rather than an ordinary novice chase not why he is sending him chasing more generally.

or to put it more precisely I was providing my assessment of what he meant by ‘to make it worthwhile’

Ok but you’ve missed my point as well.

He runs all his best novice chasers at Kempton and if this lad is half as good as some that have ran there then why not run him there? I’d say it’s far more to do with the regard he holds Sir Gino than prize money.

He’s running at Xmas, Henderson loves Kempton as a track for novices, it’s a race all his best have went to. As others have said if Ballyburn puts him away he can retain his novice status and pick some Grade 1 hurdles races if he doesn’t think he’d reverse running in the spring festivals.

I’m really not sure why you are trying to debate something here. My post was in response the posts from Eggs and Carnage (1668 and 1669) simply providing a different perspective of what he meant by ‘to make it worthwhile’ I am not and was not remotely interested in why he has chosen the Wayward Lad specifically. I was just and only pointing out what he meant by the word ‘worthwhile’ . I’m quickly beginning to regret it

Do you always seem like you’ve come out of the wrong side of the bed?

                            Jeez lighten up man.

I’m merely responding to you that I’d be very surprised if it was anything to do with prize money. Anyway enjoy the rest of your Sunday if you can, crack a smile

                            • Can anyone recall whether Firefox was an early entry in the Faugheen Novice Chase? If anyone has the early entry list that would be appreciated.
