Why wouldn't he run him in the race at Limerick... stamina shouldn't be a concern and its a grade 1 he'd likely be odds on for and PMullins could get the ride. I took what Mullins said about the novices chases around Christmas with a pinch of salt, he was clearly upset with the axing of the 2M at Leopardstown.

    • Willie enters horses everywhere to keep options open. He's already said he won't go there and will go elsewhere but if for example Kempton was called off, would be rather go to Limerick or wait for Naas or somewhere else. It will just be a contingency plan.

      • Dancing City with an entry in the 3m beginners chase at Punchestown next Tuesday!

Quai De Bourbon also entered, along with a few others than could be of interest.

Could go some way deciding where Ballyburn ends up.

I think Ballyburn decides where Ballyburn ends up. If his jumping doesn't improve I see no way he can go over 2m. I'm expecting a slicker performance from him, next time out, otherwise it will be up in trip, regardless.

Yeah possibly. If he does go BANC that race will be something else!

Can I remember a stat from someone on here last year that the winners of the Brown's normally start out at a shorter distance than 3m?

The Real Whacker the only one in last ten years to start at 3m. He did drop down to 2 1/2m on 2nd start for the Dipper though.

Thanks Runragged I've been lurking awhile and knew I had read it somewhere

                      Yeah, you're not mistaken.

Not many in recent years have done it

                      • I can't be bothered checking back all the way but I suspect that most recent BANC winners had hurdles form over 3 miles even if they started their chasing career over shorter. Possibly just a quirk of the racing calendar.

It probably just sides with those who have 3m hurdles form, however it's not required.

Might Bite & L'homme Presse never raced over 3m over hurdles.

Fact To File never went hurdling.

Champ & Topofthegame only had one run over 3m over hurdles.

The Real Whacker, Monkfish & Presenting Percy all.had form over 3m over hurdles.

                          These are more recent winners.

Going back further it looks more heavily weighted to those with that 3m hurdle form. Times have changed though.

And so has the racing calendar. It's an interesting stat but probably meaningless.

                            • Interesting switch for the race in recent years. Always used to be experience and form at 3m was required. Presenting Percy even won the Porterstown over 3m 5f at Fairyhouse. However, last few years has seen a switch with the last 6 having 4 or less runs and only The Real Whacker and Monkfish from the last 5 to have even raced at 3m prior. The last two had run just twice over fences before the BANC.

Should note obviously with the NH Chase and 2 1/2m chase becoming handicaps then that could easily change the profile of winners.
