  • It's his next race that will dictate, so interesting to see what willie mentions.
Completely friendless in the arkle market, and not much interest in the other race either.

Good at the end of the race - handy for an Arkle
Yeah this was completely different to how I watched it live, but the analysis was so good wasn't it and completely changed my thoughts on how he ran.

Haven't seen the RTV piece, for full context, but does it not stand to reason that the faster you run the faster you'll jump ? be weird if the opposite happened.

Obviously the positive is that his jumping was fine at a faster pace. I get that part.

Not in Ballyburns case, as Ruby pointed out. Slowed down on average 5mph to jump the fence, I think it was, or something like that.

I think the point is you can run fast up to a fence and slow down to jump it.

I get the time in the air and technique over them and how quickly away they get/or ground they lose to others etc - from one side to another comparison. Which I think is what they did with Ballyburn.

But that's different to slowing down on the approach. 5mph would be fairly obvious to the eye in that respect.

I thought the lengths gained was relative to the rest of the field but might be wrong on that? Obvious caveats that tired horses will jump slower but if your jumping gets better relative to the rest of the field as the speed increases, that's definitively a massive positive beyond what you're saying here

                Yeah of course
So then you have to consider the merits of the race itself and relative opposition.

I'd be absolutely gob smacked, it just wont happen.

We decided not to go chasing with him last season, but that’s what he’ll do this season. We’d like to get him out soon if we can and I think he has a chance to be a top novice chaser this season. He seemed very suited by mid-range trips over hurdles, but we’ll work out what way to point him based on what he does on the track. If we feel he needs a mid-range trip, we might have to wait for Fairyhouse or Aintree with him which will be Cheltenham’s loss, but there we are, nothing stays the same.

Hardly like people are just saying it for no reason tbf

Yeah I know I seen the comments but that was in a stable tour last week - long time in willie land

Worth taking a watch of the post race interview with Gary

He suggests is that his trip the mid trip almost pin holing him into that, and Paul was quick to suggest he'd have no bother coming back if needed 'opens a lot of doors'

Post race comments from Willie would be nice

It's the envelope of time 30ft before and 30ft after so it's not about the actual jump in isolation, it's about relative time lost over that distance

That's my understanding of that bit they do anyway - happy to be told otherwise

Yeah I know I commented on it then

Just saying that you give it no chance looks a bit dogmatic when its in black and white

When has he ever left his highest rated horse going nov chasing at home? Especially when the jock has come out after riding him in a nov chase and saying he isn't just a 2m4 horse

Yeah I understand that, but that's barely a stride and a half. Man O War had a 28ft stride at full gallop.

So the faster you're going between fences will still mean a quicker jump on average.
The speed lost is more on the landing side and how they shape over the fence, and organise their landing feet etc.
Although with some poor jumpers or tired horses it is obvious they are slowing on the approach.

Well never but he would have done if the JLT didn't exist potentially

Un De Sceaux and Yorkhill season, Yorkhill could have been saved for Aintree

Obviously unknown factors but the landscape has changed and you're not acknowledging it as a factor?

“He was class. He jumped brilliant, he got a bit lackadaisical in the middle of it but when I opened him up at the back of the second-last, he took off,” said Townend.

“He had a great jump at the last and did everything I wanted him to do. He stood off when I wanted him and was good at getting in. I’m very happy.

“He was quick over the first couple and popped away when I wanted him then. When I lit him up at the back of the second-last, he took off.

“He went to sleep on me after jumping the two out of Ballyhack and I was happy enough not to light him up that far out.

“I was hoping when I did he would come alive and he did – mustard.”
