    Yep. Listening to Nicky I'm not sure he's aware of that . He mentioned the allowance when saying he'd go chasing.

      I think 16 have tried in the 15 years since the allowance was taken away (3 of these (Rivière d’Etel, Haut En CouldursCouleurs, Saint Sam) in one year ie 2022). Fakir D’oudairies arguably got closest to winning when 1 1/2 l 2nd to Put The Kettle On. Due to a standing start several did not give their running so it’s not seen as particularly strong year. He was though well supported.

      Not surprisingly most of these were French bred and they tend to mature earlier than Irish breds but even they have struggled without the age concession. I’m not persuaded that backing a 5 yr old is wise unless it is a below par year and at this stage even without Ballyburn it does not look that way.

          There is an allowance but it reduces over the course of the season each month. I think by the time the festival comes around it’s level weights.

            Coincidentally the last 5yo to win the RSA/BANC/Broadway was Star de Mohaison also in 2006 when, I assume, 5yo's also got a 5lb allowance. Also to bear in mind only one 6yo, Don Poli, has won the RSA/BANC/Broadway since 2006. Net net the history would suggest it will take a truly exceptional 5yo to win either the Arkle or the BANC. Are Sir Gino and/or Majborough that exceptional ? Not for me.

              £100 quid would be enough to move that Lobos

              • I know it's hypothetical, but had Sir Gino turned up to the Triumph do we think he beats Majborough?

                Personally for me, I think he does, and on this basis would we even be having these conversations regarding Majborough?

                • We've had a winner of the QMCC as a 5 year old in Master Minded in that period, who won without a weight allowance.

                  In France, you have 5 year olds winning the French Gold Cup over 3m6. If the horse is good enough, they'll win despite their age.

                  I'd have thought Sir Gino would have beaten Majborough at Cheltenham. He beat Kargese easier than Majborough did and the hill wouldn't stop him.

                  • Ballyburn having a little wobble on BFX for the Arkle? Maybe just because of the Sir Gino news as he’s gone into 2nd fav… Ballyburn remains the same for CH and clipped in slightly for the Browns

                      I agree,he was undoubtedly the top 4yo imo. Anything being targeted at the Arkle with a hurdles rating of 150+ demands respect no matter what age it is. Being at Seven Barrows is another plus also for me.

                        As far as I can see, Star de Mohaison had a 10lb allowance., presumably related to race distance.

                            Yes the WFA scale is based on age and distance with different allowances for hurdles and chases over 2m, 2.5m and 3m.

                            November
                            2m = 8lb
                            2.5m = 9lb
                            3m = 10lb

                            March
                            2m = 0lb
                            2.5m = 2lb
                            3m = 4lb

                              I stand corrected. Appreciate the clarity................Thanks. I'm leaving the 5yo's out of my AP thinking for Novice Chasing.
