  • In RP tonight - Slade Steel pencilled in for the 2m4f Beginners Chase won by American Mike (vs Fact To File) at Navan this coming weekend. "Slate Steel could return at Navan next weekend," the trainer said. "There's a beginners' chase there over two and a half miles which would look up his street. He seems really good at home."

Better Days Ahead on course for that I think it was from Gordons too, so a decent match up

Never a BANC horse and too high for Turners.
Would get taken off his feet in a championship 2m race. I wouldn’t back him for the Arkle with your money.

You may be right. Done all his racing over the minimum so don't entirely agree. Nowhere else for him to go apart from missing the Fez imo. Nabbed a bit of 169/1 about him which will do me as cover against my main fancy.

Maybe the BANC shouts aren't so outrageous!

Not sure many Arkle horses start off at 2 1/2 miles for their first novice chase, so a fair indication that Henry is thinking Browns rather than Arkle as the Cheltenham goal ?

                …10-1 Ark, 20-1 BANC.

Put The Kettle On first 4 runs over fences was around 2 1/2m. She only dropped back to 2m in the Arkle trial, her final run before the Festival.

Yeah, personally would not be too confident which race right now for SS

                    • Quilixios also began at 2m 3f before stepping up to 3m and then coming back down to 2m for the Arkle just last year. Maybe the yard don't like to give their novices too much of a jumping test on chasing debut, letting them find their feet over further before dropping back to the minimum trip?

Inthepocket looking more and more likely to run in the Arkle I'd say. Sending Slade Steel to the BANC would give Henry two good shouts of good prize money. Still has that Question mark though re where Ballyburn is going. Will go to the wire I reckon like last season. Ground will have a say as well.

But they never saw her as a future GC type though like Slade Steel. Chalk and cheese.

                            • I'd urge anyone who has backed SS for the Arkle to perhaps have a little cover in the BANC as 20/1 imo could still be big value. Without Ballyburn in the race he'd deserve to be fav in my book.

I did last week after your insistence I thought about it and pulled the trigger. Only very small stakes but i plan on just topping up small amounts until I feel over got sufficient cover. He does still have Hiddenvalley Lake and An Tobar to come out for Robcour too to throw their hays into the ring and they are more staying chase types I'd say but I have taken the cover.
