  • JP doesn't need a runner in every race. If he wants a runner in the BANC, he could buy one or put Sa Majeste or even Bioluminescence in it. In all likelihood, he just doesn't have a runner.

    • Only just caught up with the race. Take Sir Gino out of the race and Ballyburn would be an even money fav for the Arkle in my opinion. He was big at the first but otherwise jumped quite low and accurately (bar the error at the last). His jump at the third was exquisite … but was still second best at that fence. He travelled nicely too.

And all of that makes Sir Gino even more impressive. He didn’t beat a version of Ballyburn making errors at his fences, or even being ponderous. I try to measure my language and avoid overusing superlatives but to my eye, that was extraordinary. It was the best chase debut I’ve seen bar none. And how brilliant that he could be in open company at 6.

I know we’ve ‘forgotten’ about Majborough to an extent, but he’ll not lay a glove on Sir Gino. It’d be a good race between him and Ballyburn, but Sir Gino has the hallmark of a potential great over 2 miles.

However, in true Columbo style, just one thing … Ballyburn would get a swing at Cheltenham the weights, he did jump left, and he’d prefer the undulations of Cheltenham.

      But he’d still lose.

        • Can't see them running a 5yo in the banc. Especially with the way he jumped and travelled on debut.

As it stands he's willies best arkle horse. Unless impaire bolts in tomorrow.

          • I've been in the pub all day but that was almost identical to Sprinter vs Peddlers

            • Why on earth are Majborough & Brown Advisory being mentioned in the same breath? Mental.

There's only one person on planet earth connecting those two dots.

                • Also, Willie can moan as much as he wants about the loss of the Turners and the Irish G1 at Christmas but it has felt like we’ve had the best races this side of Christmas in a long while. And that’s a part of the reason why.

Willie has to be given credit (imo) for sending his over to give us the match ups.

Oh absolutely. He does run them in the races that are available, and that makes for great racing.

                      • Two likely types there against a race fit horse. An Tobar stepped up again will improve too.

Started out well, then the mistake knocked his confidence I'd say, before jumping the last 2 well, hard fit horse beat the other 2.

Wouldn't be rushing to back either Chap or QDB though I dont think

I’m wondering if either will sneak under 145. QDB in particular looked like he’d want as far as possible.
