  • I'm quite surprised that there's been no mention of bill joyce putting in a cracking effort today.

I know British trained novice hurdlers aren't popular on here, and it's very justified with the recent years results.

BUT for nobody to even give him a token mention for the Bartlett possibly is just bloody daft

He went off 7/1 for last years bumper. In a race dominated by irish horses, for years. Yet in the week up to the race he went from 40/1 to 7/1, and ok jonjo O'Neil might not be considered a great trainer, but when one of his gets backed like that it's normally worth noting it down.

So anyway I'm going to give him the mention he deserves.
He looks to have a very stamina laden pedigree, he looks ideal for the bartlett.
Potters charm would mince him in the Turners hurdle, let alone the Irish.

Below is taken from attheraces, sounds more bartlett than anything to me

“You would have to be pleased with that, he’s a big, strong horse and a chaser in the making,” said AJ O’Neill.

“He was keen enough early but with a bit of free rein he gets into a nice rhythm.

“He’s a staying chaser in future, what he does the rest of this year we’ll have to wait and see. There’s a couple of options but nothing concrete.

“We know he goes on soft ground, he’s a big, strong horse and he can plough on through it.

“He’s definitely one of our nicer ones and you wouldn’t mind having a couple more like him.”

The man on board said: : “I was very impressed. He was a little bit keen with me early, so I just let him stride on a bit going down the hill. He then idled a bit and I was able to fill him up going down the back turning in.

“He’s a relentless galloper and jumped well on the whole today. He was looking for a bit of company after the last.

“It read to me like a fair race on paper and I’d say it will probably end up being one.

“There has been a bit of pressure because we have always liked him. He got beat in the Champion Bumper but has won everything else so has done well so

    • I agree AaronLad 33/1 is a mighty price for the Bartlett. He’d look the best of the British at this stage and our recent record in that race isn’t too bad.

        Yep, agree too.
Think 33 is generous to be honest , wide open race.
Trainer win it before and like you say he does seem to be describing an AB type.

just reading a racing history of Cheltenham over the years and it brought home to me how it goes in cycles. One year in the 80’s there were only 31 runners from Ireland over the 3 days now A lot of Irish stables exceed that figure themselves. British horses have had a lean time of late but it can change quickly. There are signs that UK stables are buying big and there are positive signs. I would agree that we on the Forum cannot be blinkered to this and that horses like Bill Joyce deserve a 2nd look.

          • Diva Luna declared for Monday

Form just boosted by Honky Tonk Highway. 2nd to her in PTP but spanked her at Aintree.

            • Jasmin looks a Ballymore horse all over imo! Seemed to lose track couple times through the race so not sure the end to end gallop of a supreme would suit. Slower pace of the Ballymore and that kick at the end looks tailor made for me.

              • ….looks like JdV cut to 5-1 Turn by 365 yet pushed out to 12s by Hills. 16s Supreme.

                  with that jumping? really?

Looked to lose more ground at hurdles than he did jump fluently.

Surprising he’s been cut for any race with his jumping.
Finished the race quite strong though.
Certainly would not look at Supreme for him.
Can see why he’s shorter for Turners for sure.

                    • Jumped awful to begin with but improved a little as race went on. Didn't blow me away but should get a mid 130s RPR on a line through The Enabler and having backed for Turners then that is definitely his race. Second run upped in grade should tell us a lot more.

                      • Couldn’t bring myself to back JDV for any race so far and not gonna be in any rush to back him for any race after todays run. Definitely not a Supreme horse and I’m hoping Kopek can be Willies Turners horse

                        • I saw it slightly nearer to Craig. All of Willie’s are coming on. And he’s beaten a very race fit Enabler who was certainly trying today. His jumping needs to improve, but should. I liked the turn of foot and the that that he stayed. Doesn’t shirk a battle either.

Im pleased to have 12s for the Turners.

I’ll be getting out of the Supreme bet if I can.

                            • Aye his jumping wasn’t great, was ok, but that can improve in time. As EE says, the enabler was race fit and the turn of foot when the burners went on race was over. He jumps like that in a supreme he’d be left at the top of the hill. Ballymore pace as we all know is slower with a kick.

His jumping does need to improve, and bookies obviously think it will, some more than others it seems.
Prices range from 6 to 12 for Turners
