Thanks for clarifying what I thought
Yeah, as I said not a huge ratings person when looking at punting, and certainly not with nov hurdlers starting out.
I'm not a huge RPR fan but they are quite right to rate on what was achieved rather than speculate on what might have been achieved. This is where the Timeform symbols come in handy.
Of course it's personal preference, but these guidelines that I set for myself when identifying when it's time to have a Supreme bet might help. Rule 4 being relevant to this discussion. If you back every horse that hits 120 in an easy race you'll have a lot of horses to back.
Out of interest
Anyone know what ratings are generally given to Supreme winners for their maiden victory around this time of year?
Not be a huge ratings man myself.
Just had a quick search
Am I correct in saying that the last two winners got ratings in the 120’s?
With all my AP Novice Hurdlers and Chasers, all I am looking for is an entry first, then hoping for a declaration, then for them to run well and preferably win and especially jump well and then for them to come out of the race ok. All that would be a perfect introduction for me. Most of these early season beginners and Novice hurdles are simply to educate and learn from and see where they fit and where to place them next.
From a personal point of view I was visually impressed by RC's win. Thought he jumped and travelled beautifully, quickened immediately when asked for his effort and ran through the line strong. Everything you could possibly ask for in a maiden hurdle. I know a few are sceptical but I do think the Bumper form will turn out to get top class .

Yep exactly how I look at it.
I would say the jumping first, and then how they settle and see out the race is most important for me.
How someone else rates them with numbers is certainly secondary for me.

Yes it was pretty much the perfect debut for a nov hurdler imo.

If a horse you've backed wins first time up and also gets a decent RPR then it definitely feels like a plus but I don't get hung up on it at all. Visuals are huge for me.

Absolutely. There’s a lot that will crab the champion bumper form, but I think that the first 3 home will have a big say in this season’s supreme and Gallagher hurdles. Hoping jalon will be fit and well enough to run around Christmas

I was of a similar impression. He did look a unit of a horse like Spectre said, but then again so have some of the previous Supreme winners, so that doesn't bother me.
I do agree a bit with archie too about RPR's being too high for beating nothing. Recent seasons have horses hitting 140+ on debut. They needed to reign it in which they've seemingly done, but think they've probably gone the other way now.
Kayf Tara's are not usually ones I'd have as 2m novice hurdlers but Edwardstone hit 150 as a 2m hurdler, admittedly second season, but did finished 6th in a Supreme, albeit well beaten, but I suspect Gordon will be able to get more out of Romeo as a hurdler than Alan King did of Edwardstone.
Impossible to say if he's the likely winner after a maiden hurdle win, but I do think he'll win the Royal Bond, go shorter and will be one of leading contenders for a while at least. Willie will likely have a strong hand, so impossible not to think he will have one too good for Romeo but it only takes a stone bruise to change things.

They can vary wildly on debut, depending on where you run and what you beat
