  • January ‘24 Yankee

    Mom has asked for a theme discussion re this months Yankee, so worth starting a discussion in here. Last January’s selections were;

    January:
    - Billaway (Foxhunters) 8/1
    - Good Land (Ballymore) 12/1
    - Favori De Champbou (Albert Bartlett) 12/1
    - Fact To File (Champion Bumper) 20/1

Could I suggest that maybe these monthly "Yankee Themes"
could be spread across 2 Themes (some months)

That could stop any of us having to try to "stretch" a theme over 4 horses, and get a little thin with the last pick or two, on a single theme...

Maybe this month a mix of....
    ● comeback kids
    ● Ratings bangers (High achievers)

Gives you a decent mix of those who lost in recent times - who you think are better than that come March (ie: Stage Star, Mirazur West, Mighty Bandit etc)

....and those who did very well recently by putting up a big rating

ie: Fact To File's 160 RPR in a BeginCH at Christmas.

    That rating is
    ● only 3lb lower than Galopin put up 2 years ago in the same race, on his Chase debut, when he created a big WOW moment.

    ● the same rating that G.Warrior got for winning the Grade 1 at Limerick

    ● 9lb higher than Stay Away Fay

    ● 2lb higher than Grangeclare West got winning the Grade 1 at Leopardstown

    ● a 20lb improvement on his racecourse debut over obstacles (having never ran in a Hurdle race)

Probably Il Est Francais is the only NovCH with a higher current RPR.

PS: I will be updating the whole Christmas period ratings on my Festival RPR Diary in the next day or two.

Just waiting on Sunday/Monday ratings to come through to finish this and do a big update post on that Diary.

Which race would you expect FTF to turn up in Sax??

I'd be looking at horses who are likely to perform well at the DRF and who, therefore, won't be available at the same price for the February yankee.

Something that I'm looking at for my own purposes is using the GDC/El Fabiolo/Marine Nat treble (about 6.35/1) as one leg in a yankee or patent.

          Im thinking the BANC

Unfortunately some might be thinking the same, and price cuts are starting from 4.45pm today.

Maybe someone is reading our wonderful FJ website, and plunging in on the rating assessment above, on his NovCH 160 being best in the UK/IRE

....or maybe just a tip online somewhere else

Was hoping you'd say Turners as I backed him for that after Willie loosely namechecked the race for him. Not got him backed for the BANC....

As he's going to be Willie's GC horse next season, maybe they'll take the same route as GDC......

Everythings up for grabs at this stage, your plan to follow Willie's recent thought process could prove right.

He has so many options across all 4 novice chases, its never easy to follow.

Think a lot will depend on G Warrior and whether he gets tried LH at the DRF and how he gets on. So many permutations.

Wonder if he will go 2M Irish Arkle there, and Facile Vega switch to the 2M5F race.

That would give Gaelic Warrior less fences to jump, if he starts starts to go to the right at them.

After R4H’s interesting tidbit earlier, how about Embassy Gardens (NHC) best priced 9/1?

Makes complete sense as he did say Vega might have to step up and I wouldn't have any worries GW stepping back in distance the way he travels.

….thinking about the DRF in the first few days of Feb and how it might impact this, given when MoM normally posts his selections. There is the potential of asking Saxon Warrior to pick a separate DRF Yankee based on his analysis (either before or after that meeting).

2 weeks and no posts on this. Are we all out of ideas?

With my whole "redemption yankee" in mind there are some crazy big prices out now on previous solid fancies....

                              Supreme - Mirazur West @ 20/1
                              Gold Cup - Gerri Colombe @ 10/1
                              Ryanair - Stage Star @ 7/1
                              Ballymore / Baring Bingham - Ile Atlantique @ 8/1
