To survive, like most sports, the fans will want to see the best vs the best, as often as possible.
Outside of handicaps we rarely see big clashes during the normal season and now we also regularly get denied these at the festival.
The Mares programme has done its job and we now have more mares in training than previously.
The races and prizes would still be there to go for, and would add to the season overall. They'll not stop training mares if these races were no longer part of the festival.
But without doubt the festival would benefit from less dilution and seeing more of the best vs the best. They could even offer bonuses for the Mares who go on to the festival.
It's what racing is all about.
If we can't get this to happen at the Festival more often then the sport is shooting itself in the foot.
The season itself is already in decline, you only have to see the attendance for Newbury's "Super" Saturday - and that was actually a decent card by recent standards.
