  • October ‘23 Yankee

Whilst we await a conclusion to September’s selection, October discussion can commence.

This is the month when the Stable Tours start being published & attention turns to NH season so hopefully more informed choices can be made. Saying that, we picked 5 last October and never got near a return.

We must do better this time

…looks like we might have done 5 of his last October and it didn’t end very well. Not sure that would be my choice but we’ll see what others think.

….problem restricting to a theme is missing out on something from the Stable Tours.

Hopefully we get some detail this month that will help give us a more informed choice regarding selections. I’d not be going for a theme myself.

I am a new boy so little say, or credibility, on this topic but I don't understand the thinking behind limiting ourselves to a theme. Picking winners this far out is hard enough without giving ourselves self imposed boundaries.

Yea it’s marmite. some people like them and some strongly dislike

I like the idea of themes myself at this stage of the year. Think they steer the conversation on horses that may not be on everyone’s mind and avoids repetitiveness. Especially the early yankee and also easier to get a consensus from 30 or so people on a subset then just picking 4 horses in general.

That said I think the themes can be broad enough not to impose crazy boundaries. That English trained only one is perfect I think. Plenty of good solid horses to choose from Nicholls, Henderson and Dan alone.

Equally I think a Yankee based off OJA, JTF isn’t too restrictive there’s plenty to pick from.

Same if it was a Mullins only theme I don’t think that would be an issue. Likely a normal Yankee would end up being his lot anyway.

I just think with a theme we know what we’re focusing on whereas last month turned into a mess where nobody knew what was going on

I see both sides of the argument. Consider me educated. Now about that Mullins Only Yankee !!!

With the Down Royal meeting at the end of the month it makes a lot of sense. That said, his festival success isn't the same since the incident. Could always have a Gordon Elliott themed discussion and see how many horses that leads to before filling in the gaps.

Handicaps aside, as it's just too far out, he has done well in the NH Chase, Fred Winter (ignore), decent Turners record and milks the Cross Country every year. If we can identify his horses for the 3 non handicap races then we should have the foundations of a good Yankee

I’m sure we usually use the October Yankee with the Elliott theme for the reasoning above linked with Saxon warriors race planning diary.

….maybe a ‘Stable Tour’ Yankee. Try and find 4 gems from the information we receive this month. I think the Mullins and Elliot stable tours appeared last October along with the other main trainers.
