      • One more run for Gerri Colombe then off to GC.

        • The fact Gerri Colombe keeps needing to get going so late up the hill

Surely that catches him out in the Gold Cup....

He didn't get the job done in an RSA

Galopin Des Champs will be away and gone?

Gerri Colombe reminds me of Don Poli too much now for me to get stung again

I should add, I could not have loved Don Poli more at the time, thought the fact he was such a sexy boat and always staying on meant there was no way he wouldn't grind past horses over the "extra 2 furlongs" and I was wrong. A classier horse beat him.

I don't want to make the same mistake again. (I know I've backed him, I'm just talking in terms of who wins the race)

Same. He's a stout horse but he'll need a lot to go right to win the GC

The defining moment for me was the Aintree run. I was deeply impressed with the way he travelled that day. He looked far from a grinder to me. The trainer has a clear plan and knows the day he needs to have him at his peak. If he has him in the kind of shape he was clearly in at Aintree, with the normal progression of a young horse and the extra stamina requirements of a gold cup I think he is a serious player

You’ve got to factor the opposition into that aintree run.
it wasn’t that deep a race was it.

Not necessarily I don’t as it was the way he travelled. Not the result, not the rpr but the pace he showed in running. Like you I have been watching horses for decades now and irrespective of the opposition I can tell when a horse is on it versus when it is more workmanlike. Don Poli would never have travelled like GC did at Aintree imo. He may well have achieved the same result and the same rating but not in that manner. As I was watching I turned to my mate and said this is like watching a different horse and that was far too early in the race for the opposition to be a factor.

As an aside I also think the new course will suit him much better than the old course.

Might be the configuration then. Maybe he gets outpaced in certain conditions- downhill sections or otherwise.
Or is he vulnerable to pace changes and gets caught flat footed. And nothing in the aintree was able to do this ?
His overall form suggests aintree was different.
i actually don’t think he’s that slow myself after watching him the other day, it just looks like he’s a bit slower than some horses to gather and quicken so will look flat footed occasionally before staying on.
He’s a diesel not an injection.

That’s a good analogy and I am hoping much of that could well be fixed by the switch in courses.

I am loving the way this race is shaping up with last years front two and mouses horse who I really rate and fastorslow who is a fast improving 7yo.

My strategy for the race is to cover my stake on last years front two and go big on the three I have mentioned. I got in early on all three so I’m sitting back and watching it all unfold now. I hope this isn’t seen as aftertiming. I wish I was able to do a diary as I could talk about my bets a little more but my strategy is so complicated now because of torturously few options and limited funds it simply doesn’t lend itself to a diary.

                        Similar strategy here.

He's not slow, but he has slow acceleration to me - he really needs to be wound up to get to the boards rather than the jockey pressing go

Good points by you and Q since

Obviously he's a serious player, and I have a similar strategy to you for it this year

I was just musing about how he reminds me on Don Poli....

The Aintree run is more of an exception than his win last weekend and the BANC before that run.

The Don Poli comparison is also not worth very much, I was just typing out loud last night

Galopin Des Champs getting beaten at the end of the season has kept a lot of interest in this race ante post!

You are right the Aintree race as it stands is a bit of an outlier and without it I admit I would have similar reservations as others. One thing I will have in mind is an in running play because we should know reasonably soon whether he is on a grinding day or not. (Expecting a Frankie Howard moment from Q here).

Yes much as you don’t want the superstars getting beaten it has opened things up just a little I’d say. I think this seasons renewal is quite unique as last seasons top two are still relatively young and there are a clutch of young up and comers nipping at their heels. We just need them all to get there now.

                              • Not much talk about The Real Whacker
Sounds obvious now, but I think the 3 miler couldnt stick with the pace, and potentially needed the run too

I do think The Real Whacker, and this is no disrespect, will be another Bristol De Mai. I wouldnt rule him out, he's a very good horse. He's shaping up to be one of those who will win 3 miles but just shy of TOP TOP grade 1 company
