  • 2024 Gold Cup

I noticed we had opened specific race threads by this time last year (outside of novices and handicaps), so perhaps worth focusing discussion in these.

From the Yankee debates, GDC, Gerri Colombe & Fastorslow seem popular.

    Current odds;

    GDC 2-1
    Gerri 7-1
    BMG 12-1
    Shishkin 16-1
    Fastorslow 16-1
    Coroach 20-1
    TRW 20-1
    L’Homme 20-1
    25-1 Bar.

….I was wondering if Gentlemansgame might be of interest for this. I appreciate Robcour have a more high-profile contender but he was highlighted at the start of last season and won nicely over 2m 5f on his debut over fences. Not widely quoted but 66-1 with Hills.

Just the cliff horse cherry bomb (Gerri colombe) for me. Love him. Hope he gets there in one piece and puts the old diesel motor into overdrive, powering up the hill.

I’m backing Gerri, looks a proper Gold Cup horse. Wouldn’t want to be on anything else if the ground came up soft / testing, although I don’t think he’s as slow as many think he is

I'm not looking past GDC or Fastorslow at this point. One needs no introduction, the other has huge upside potential as the Wolf of Wall Street might say. Hasn't got the credit he deserves for his big win (in a race ran fairly) because 'Punchestown throws up funny results (unless it's a form boost to one they like) and the others had had a hard race at Cheltenham (unlike a handicap which are total processions and against the future National winner about 20lb well)'. Can't have Gerri Colombe, a one dimensional fighter with a proper padded out record.

              Similar thoughts here.
As mentioned elsewhere I do think bravemansgame is an each way professional punters play to lay.
I do like second season chasers though so Gerri cannot be ruled out come the day. But as I’ve previously mentioned I think his price is shite as it’s rare a second season chaser comes out of the blocks early season and dominates his elders.
Unless you’re exceptional or the division has become significantly weaker.
I don’t think either applies and would be very surprised if he remained single figures throughout the season.

                  In fact.
If Gerri Colombe was racing in November against any of the top 10 in the Gold cup markets off levels.
Id be all over him getting beat, especially if the bookies had him favourite.
GDC currently only one ahead of him in the market is fooking madness.
Suggests to me that I may get an opportunity to put my money where my mouth is.

I’d still quite fancy him running a big race in the gold cup though.

Can't warm to him as a GC winner. Future Grand National winner , yes.

Might be wrong, be he’s just another Don Poli isn’t he? I’m not convinced he’s got the speed to lay up with the better horses mid race and will just run on at the end. Obviously some think he has more speed than we have seen, but not for me.

This is absolutely my concern. He couldn’t keep up with Bronn and The Real Whacker last year in his conditions. I can’t see the GC pace being any slower and GDC, BMG etc will certainly finish out their races better. If it were in decent ground it might highlight this concern even more. Conversely it were a slowly run affair, he’d likely be out paced by horses with more toe.

Didn’t he win graded novices around sandown 2m4f and aintree 3m?
no worries with his pace or class.
