2024 Novice Chasers

In general horses have a certain amount of miles in their legs particularly the ones that are very hard on themselves in each and every race like Flooring Porter, and it’s not just the racing but the training. He had a very busy time of it as a four year old and the trainer has I think tried to compensate for that by lessening his load a little but I have some reservations whether FP can now withstand a seasons training AND pitch up in March in the best possible shape. Yes there are always exceptions perhaps like Faugheen but the exceptions prove the rule. He is priced fairly but not amazingly at this very early stage of the season imo.

And Thistlecrack, another exception? same age as Flooring porter when going novice chasing, is the reason i use him, as well as being a stayers hurdle champion, only once though

Thistlcrack retired having had one race less than FP has already had and began his novice chase career with half the number of runs than FP. My post talks about miles in the legs and not age. I did that deliberately

He had also achieved his four best RPRs the previous season and so had shown little sign of decline. Arguably he actually went chasing at the peak of his career.

Do I need to give examples of horses that have had longevity?
Flooring porter didn't start racing the way he does now until around his 13th start.
You're making him out to be a pensioner Rooster, when he isn't.
If any young up and comer can go with him in the rsa this year, they'll be an absolute superstar, and i don't see one.
Last season on january 18th it was 50/50 for him to make the stayers, he came a creditable 4th. He aint over the hill nowhere near it.

I love this horse being doubted, I love him, as anyone does when a horse does what this fella has done for me, I'm in a very good position with him so i don't need to take the 12's and maybe i got carried away saying i can't believe he's still 12/1, but i was saying the same in january 2021 when he was still 16's for his 1st stayers .

So do you think he is as good as he always was and last season was just a blip? There is no denying his form all through last season was below anything he had achieved in his previous couple of seasons, so not unreasonable to believe the horse is gradually losing his ability, especially with a horse who gives it his all on every run and at the highest level for the last few seasons.
