Bagenalstown, Co.Carlow CAREER FORM FIGURES: 41 – 1 CAREER WINS: 2022: Mar FONTAINEBLEAU Very Soft Hdle 2m 2f: 2023: Apr CORK Yielding Hdle 2m News broke in July that six times Grade 1 winner Chacun Pour Soi had been retired. The ex-French gelding, who began his career with Emmanuel Clayeux across the English Channel, won eight times over fences earning an official rating of 176 last year. A four times winner at Leopardstown, including the Grade 1 Dublin Chase on three occasions, it is worth remembering he was absent for 1089 days between March 2016 and March 2019. He proved well worth the wait for owners Rich and Susannah Ricci and champion trainer Willie Mullins. In total, the son of Policy Maker amassed ?692,995 in prize-money and was a wonderful horse. The search has begun for a replacement and the Ricci’s are optimistic they have another exciting chase prospect in the dual hurdles winner Mister Policeman. Featured in the French Revolution section last season, the Triple Treat gelding was bought for €120,000 in March 2022 having won by five lengths at Fontainebleau five days earlier. Trained by David Cottin, he had finished fourth on his jumping bow at the same track three weeks prevously. The most impressive aspect of his victory was the turn of foot he displayed after the last to pull away on the run-in. Absent for 380 days, the five year old didn’t make his Irish debut until Easter Sunday contesting an eight runner conditions hurdle over two miles at Cork. With Paul Townend on duty at Fairyhouse, champion conditional jockey Michael O’Sullivan took the ride and Mister Policeman made a lasting impression when beating 142 rated stablemate Cash Back and the ill-fated Sole Pretender by upwards of two and a quarter lengths. Travelling strongly throughout, the Ricci owned runner hit the front at the second last and only had to be nudged out to win with plenty to spare. The third and fourth have won Listed and Grade 3 events subsequently. Mister Policeman is set to go novice chasing and connections are hoping he will develop into an Arkle Trophy contender. Even though he has winning form over further, he didn’t look devoid of speed at Cork and a strongly run two miles looks ideal. Ireland’s champion trainer has won 5 of the last 9 renewals of Grade 1 championship event at the Cheltenham Festival and is set to have a formidable hand for the 2024 renewal. This lightly raced ex-French gelding could be the pick. POINTS TO NOTE: Probable Best Distance - 2 miles Preferred Going - Good/Soft Connection’s Comments: “He’s a lovely horse with a big future. He’s fairly straightforward and will come on a lot for it. He could go up in trip, too.” Michael O’SULLIVAN at Cork (9/4/23)
