  • July ‘23 Yankee

I’m not a great one for theme’s as it can restrict nominations but happy to go with one if folk want. From what I can see, there wasn’t a theme last July but we failed to find a winner.

Also, I’m assuming MoM will still be missing, so perhaps a bit of interest if one of you good folk wants to volunteer to facilitate discussion and come up with final selections if our leader isn’t back at the end of the month.

Not sure what the range of themes that were used in the past but throwing a few ideas out there if there’s an appetite for any of the below

    English trained only
    Irish trained only
    French bred only
A specific grand sire or group of sires / bloodlines etc

I think the English trained one or French bred theme could be interesting, the former at least drives us away from willie mullins debate.. although it severely limits the selection pool of winners haha..

French bred one could be fun and worthwhile

How about certain target despite Constitution Hill.

I.e. arkle/Champion chase/champion hurdle/gold cup horses that have a set target and won't be affected by wherever the hill goes. Likely some in those races with it as a nailed on target and extra value while other horses are listed with that decision is up in the air pending....

….don’t think we need a theme, myself.

How about just finding 4 winners at decent odds.

              ….I’ll throw a couple of Aintree winners into the mix for consideration;

              Banbridge (Ryanair) 16-1
              West Balboa (Stayers) 33-1

Banbridge carries a bit of risk with JoB having form for saving one for Aintree but 16-1 is a whopping price for a horse that just seems to produce.

West Balboa has been highlighted in his diary by Saxon Warrior and from what a few who seem close to Skelton stable have posted, will be campaigned over 3m next season. Relatively lightly raced, seemed to thrive for the step-up in trip at Aintree.

….if MoM remains ‘on leave’, I will facilitate the discussion and select the July Yankee & it would be appreciated if you could volunteer for August’s effort. We’ll watch this space for MoMs return.

in the meantime, keep the suggestions coming, it’s a ‘no theme’ Yankee.
