June ‘23; The Roger ‘Diamond Geezer’ Hunter Yankee

Time to start a thread for the June Yankee & I note last years was dedicated to Roger Hunter, our very own ‘Diamond Geezer’, so thought it nice to keep him in our thoughts.

I’m sure MoM will be back with us soon to facilitate. I don’t think we had a theme for this last year but I’m sure MoM would appreciate any thoughts.

….I wondered if a ‘returning winners’ theme might give us a chance of finding a few successes. Folk on here will know if returning winners have a decent record & I don’t think we should be put off by nominating horses that have already been included in Yankees this year.

El Fab; A Dream to Share; Stage Star; Stay Away Fay; GDC; Premier Magic, Marine National etc must surely have chances next year.

….’returning winners’ is just a suggestion. We can consider any theme or just look for 4 selections.

….read a post that the plan is to keep IEP over hurdles but no idea how valid that is.

The Hunter Chase isn’t everybody’s cup of tea but Premier Magic was popular in the May thread, as was Envoi Allen for Ryanair. Impervious (Ryanair) well highlighted.

My own nomination if we go for returning winners would be Stay Away Fay (BANC). Nicholls said in his pre-Festival stable tour that he’s made to be a chaser.

Not sure if 4 returning winners can win again.

The problem with all the returning champs listed is that they are all short already and all already in other yankees...

Not that I have any tucked away but how about foreign wispers? French Raiders? Irish rockets on hold since last season?

I just can't see 4 shorties being a popular Yankee...

….not necessarily short, the Nicholls winners Stage Star & SAF are available at 16-1, Premier Magic is 12s.

Happy to go another route if posters prefer, we don’t have to be restricted by a theme at this point, we just need to find 4 with a chance.

Lets see what others think & decide if it’s theme or not today.

Remember looking at the 10-year stats on this very point a couple of years ago.

From memory, I think you normally get between 4 and 7 of last year’s winners rocking up again.

So I’d say a minimum of 4 is an odds-on certainty- we just need to find the right ones

To be honest , the prices don't really bother me . I think the point of the yankees .
is to promote some discussion and have a bit of fun , obviously we'd like to get some big priced winners in there .
if possible .. so i'm always happy to go with the flow . .

I agree. Only reason I like slightly longer odds picks is my habit of always going each way with cheltenham bets as there is always the oddities at the festival.

• Marine National - Arkle I think he’s worth a squeak, CH matter is pointing to hurdles, Barry said he will avoid. Has schooled fences already. Looks the one to beat in the Arkle - if IEP goes CH we may see FV go Turners leaving this quite open for MN

El Fab - Love love El Fab, he's featured already in a yankee but price is pretty dismal now
Con Hill - I think he will stay hurdling, not worth getting involved at the price
IEP - conflicting reports on target as you said

• The Real Whacker - I like him, he has unreal course form and still a playable price with confirmed destination

Energumene - not for me anymore unless El Fab isn't around
Delta Work - not priced up by many firms, short enough where he is available
A Dream to Share - too early to get involved with novice hurdlers
Stage Star - Not for me PN effect
Good Time Jonny - Not for me
Envoi Allen - Not for me
SDB - Surely not....
You Wear it Well - Not for me
Lossiemouth - Super mare, featured in a yankee already and short priced. Prefer GM.

GDC - hmmm... possibly can play him. Incredible horse we know will be primed for this although the thought lingers.. at 2/1 I think we can wait

• Premier Magic - I like the suggestion, is a playable price, returning winners have results in the foxhunters
• Impervious - Love her, super performances one after another I think JP is covered in the mares and she could right well be a Ryanair contender as Sax pointed out
