  • Appreciate your updates Green Goddess. Good to Soft/Soft in places would be perfect for the festival on day 1.

Having been for all 4 days for all but one of the last 10 festivals (exc the pandemic one of course) and walked on parts of the course and been over on the Cross Country course multiple times, I am adamant that the ground does not dry as quickly as is famed and that it is regularly softer than they call it. The previous clerk was awful for it.

I just don’t want to see Sun/Mon rain or Thursday’s rain ruin the card by taking it to heavy.

Walking on parts of the course is very different to walking the whole course. You could walk the back straight (which is notorious for holding water) and be convinced the going was heavy, yet stand on the top bend on the far side and be convinced the going was good to soft. The wind and breeze is to blame for a lot of that and Cheltenham does dry out fast in the wind.

      • Fair enough, Charlie. I still think they call it better than it is, or has been on a number of occasions. Certainly compared to ground called at Sandown when I’ve walked across that course.

          • Latest update from the course. Hasn't dried out much yet but after a dry and warmer day ahead they're also coming around to there not much rain overnight tonight. They'll be some good in this forecast Tuesday morning. Some soft too. Whose up for a good old bit of good to soft?

              • Morning Everyone,

Here we are then, about 6 hrs out from the most important 24hr period ground-wise.

Rainfall ranges have decreaed again to 2mm to 16mm. The models really have split though, with half favouring heavy (12mm to 16mm), the second half favouring lighter (2mm to 8mm). The reason its so hard to predict is the heavy stuff is really localised. There are cloudburst showing 5mm to 10mm per hour just 30 miles away during Monday.

I imagine the range of potential grounds would extend from Good to soft all the way through to Heavy patches. While it may not be as bad as first feared soft ground is probably still most likely fir day 1.

Wednesday evening through to Thursday still looks wet but still no alignment in models so not paying attention to those forecasts yet.

                Let's see what tomorrow brings.

                    • Hopefully the rain slapping Bristol at the moment isn't hitting Cheltenham. Grim.

                      • The worst bit of this band seems to have passed south of Cheltenham at the minute.

Crikey. You’d fear for Marine Nationale’s chances looking at that.

                          • Clerk now saying Tuesday and Wednesday pretty dry so Wednesday runners may have best of ground. Rain all day Thursday.

                            • Miraculously Cheltenham seems to have missed the heavy stuff, only 3.2mm overnight.

Models have downgraded the amount of rain for today too with median rainfall forecast for next 24hrs now being just 3mm (range is still 1mm to 9mm).

If that plays out we should have beautiful NH ground.

As Lobos says above, Tuesday and Wednesday day should be relatively dry before another band rolls in Wednesday evening into Thursday. Even this looks less heavy than previous days but little certainty yet.

That is miraculous because the rain and wind has been relentless all night
